Karen Khachanov v Matteo Berrettini Head to Head
Khachanov and Berrettini have played each other once. Their meeting was at the indoor hard court in Sofia where the Italian stunned the Russian in three sets in the second round.
Khachanov Seeks For Consistency After Fine French Open Run
Karen Khachanov is the big mover of the week in the ATP rankings after a fantastic run to the quarterfinal of the 2019 French Open. The 23-year-old has been 0-3 in Grand Slam fourth round matches prior to Roland Garros, but managed to shock Juan Martin Del Potro in four sets to attain his maiden appearance in the last eight of a Major.
Khachanov’s achievements in Paris will come as massive boost for his confidence and consistency following a terrible start to the year. He is now at a career high ranking of No.9, making him the first Russian to be ranked inside the Top 10 since Mikhail Youzhny achieved that milestone in 2011.
The powerful hitting Russian will now look to transition his clay court brilliance to grass. In fact that should not be cause for concern since his grass court form has picked up wonderfully over the last few years. He won his first match on that surface in 2017 en route to the semifinals in Halle.
Berrettini Eyes A Second Win Over Khachanov
Karen Khachanov is not the only player who has made a big jump in the rankings this year. His second round opponent in Stuttgart will be rising Italian Matteo Berrettini who has broken inside the World’s Top 30 thanks to his fine clay court campaign.
While Berrettini had a decent clay swing (a bit of let down due to his second round exit at Roland Garros), he was largely poor outside the dirt, with his only notable result being a semifinal showing in Sofia.
The 23-year-old won his first ever tour-level match on grass at last year’s Wimbledon where he came back from two sets down to stun Jack Sock.
Berrettini knocked out the mercurial Australian Nick Kyrgios in the opening round in Stuttgart, further cementing his status as an ever-improving player on the grass.
Khachanov v Berrettini Predictions & Tips
Berrettini’s win over Kyrgios might come as a surprise for many since grass is the Australian’s best surface. But given the unpredictability of Kyrgios during the last few months, that victory should not be a measure of where his game is at. Khachanov is a more composed player with a better overall game than the Italian. Their last battle in Sofia was long one and expect the same here.
Tip: Over 2.5 sets in the match: 6/4 (888Sport)
