Richard Gasquet v Jordan Thompson Head to Head
This will be a first meeting between these two players.
Thompson Won The All-Australian Match Against De Minaur
Jordan Thompson will appear in the semifinal of an ATP tour-level event for the first time after a stunning win over fellow Aussie Alex De Minaur. Despite dropping the opening set, Thompson maintained the fine form he brought with him from the French Open to fight back for an excellent 4-6 6-2 6-3 win over Australia’s No.1 in just under two hours.
The unseeded Thompson has now earned the reward of a maiden tour-level semifinal against the defending champion Richard Gasquet who won two matches in a day to reach the last four.
Having gone 1-11 at tour-level in 2018, Thompson has responded with an 18-11 record in 2019 and that includes victories over Top 30 players such as Karen Khachanov and Grigor Dimitrov.
Gasquet Won Two Matches In A Day
Richard Gasquet has dropped out of the World’s Top 40 for the first time since 2010. This was largely due to his three-month hiatus earlier this year as a result of hernia surgery. There were big question marks on whether Gasquet would be fit enough to defend his title at the Libema Open since he was short on match fitness.
However, those doubts have been erased as the Frenchman strung three wins (including back-to-back victories yesterday) against Aljaz Bedene, Mikhail Kukushkin and Nicolas Jarry.
Gasquet is a two-time Wimbledon semifinalist and after missing the first quarter of the year, this is easily the best we have seen from the Frenchman in 2019 and just in time before action kicks-off at SW19. He has won 8 of his last 10 matches on grass, putting him in a good position to make his first final of the season which will be first since the Swedish Open last year.
Thompson v Gasquet Predictions & Tips
Thompson is overpriced to win here after performing exceptionally well this week. Gasquet’s grass court prowess is good enough to sweep Thompson on any day, but the Australian will be super confident and tough to beat. While Thompson is still at the embryonic stages making his mark on tour-level, he could benefit playing against the defending champion who is still not 100% fit.
Tip: Thompson to win: 17/11 (888Sport)
