Roger Federer v John Millman Head to Head
The two players have met twice on the ATP circuit, splitting wins amongst each other. While Federer won on the hard courts of Brisbane in 2015, Millman will always be remembered for his monumental upset of Roger Federer in the fourth round night match at the US Open last year. Federer fought the humid conditions and Millman for a four set loss after being up by a set and a break.
Federer Begins Quest for 10th Halle Title
Roger Federer returns to Halle in search of his record 10th title. The Swiss looked close to his 10th title last year, before an inspired performance in the final by Croat Borna Coric put him out in the final set. Federer who has figured in the draw at Halle for most of his career, as a warm-up to Wimbledon, received a “Welcome Home” celebration put together by tournament organizers
Federer has had a promising year thus far, with victories at the Dubai Open (ATP 500) and Miami Open (ATP 1000), as well as encouraging performances on clay after a three year break from the surface. The Swiss mentioned that he is pleased with his fitness and form, looking forward to the grass swing of the year.
The world number three and nine time Halle champion begins his campaign against John Millman of Australia.
Millman Looking for a US Open Repeat
Australian John Millman has been on the ATP circuit for most of this decade and his career has had a mix of results and promise. Millman has performed reasonably throughout his career, participating in both singles and doubles at tournaments, as well as being a member of the Australian Davis Cup team.
The gritty Millman will best be remembered for his fourth round upset of Swiss maestro Roger Federer at the US Open last year, after being down a set and a break. The victory resulted in Millman qualifying for the Grand Slam quarter finals for the only time in his career thus far.
Millman, who was then ranked a career-high 33 in the world, is currently ranked number 56. With a fighting attitude and spirit, both on and off the court, Milman’s career has had its fair share of injuries, most notably his shoulder, which has resulted in extended injury lay-offs. 2019 has been an indifferent year for the Australian, who will be looking for a better second half of the year.
Roger Federer v John Millman Predictions & Tips
The US Open defeat will still be fresh on Federer’s mind when they meet at Halle and he will be looking to erase any psychological upper hand that the Aussie may have. Millman knows from experience what it takes to beat Federer. But, these are different conditions and a different venue.
Federer has looked a better player in 2019 than he did in the second half of 2018. Playing on grass and at Halle, where no one knows the conditions better than Federer himself, it will be a tall order for Millman to once again get the better of the Swiss. Expect Millman to give it his all, but Federer is too clinical on the grass and expect him to win in straight sets.
Tip: Federer in straight sets: 4/7 (888Sport)
