Karolina Pliskova v Kristyna Pliskova Head to Head
The head to head tally between the two sisters is at 5-4 in the favour of the third seed. Karolina has won three of their last five meetings, with the last one taking place back in 2013. They met in the final qualifying round of the 2013 WTA Eastbourne, where Kristyna won to reach the main draw.
This will be their second meeting on the grass surface on the WTA Tour. After roughly six years, the Pliskova twins are set to cross paths once again, for a place in the quarterfinal of this Premier event in Birmingham.
Karolina Off to a Good Start
World No. 3 Karolina Pliskova started her campaign in the Nature Valley Classic with a good win over Mihaela Buzarnescu. Having reached the final here back in 2015, Pliskova will be eager to go the distance this time.
As a former US Open runner-up and a part of the top 10 for roughly four years now, the right-handed of the twins has always performed with a certain level of consistency and finesse. This season too, there are only a few tournaments where she didn’t reach the penultimate rounds.
Pliskova won the Italian Open most recently and prior to that, was the finalist in the Miami Open. She also enjoyed a breathtaking run in Melbourne where she defeated Serena Williams to reach the semifinal.
Kristyna, Looking to Make Some Waves
While Karolina enjoyed a wildcard entry into the main draw in Birmingham, Kristyna had a far more precarious path. Ranked in the early 100s, she had to start as a qualifier and fight her way to reach main rounds.
In the last few days, the left-handed Czech had to play four matches to set up the clash with her sister. She had a fairly smooth run in the qualifiers and started the main draw proceedings with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Viktoriya Tomova. Coincidentally, this is the exact same score with which Karolina got to a winning start here.
Kristyna hasn’t enjoyed that great of a season in comparison to Karolina. With the exception of WTA Lugano where she reached the semifinal, she succumbed in the early rounds in most of the events. She has only one singles title to her – the 2016 Tashkent Open.
Karolina v Kristyna Pliskova Predictions & Tips
This is going to be a classic battle. For one, the two sisters play with opposing hands – Karolina is right-handed while Kristyna is left-handed. This alone will create a lot of ripples in the match but the whole sister rivalry is set to add another dimension.
Kristyna is well-versed with Karolina’s play but her lack of form and momentum will be an issue here. However, she has the skillset to deliver the massive upset. At the same time, she is more accustomed to grass currently than her younger sibling and that may give her a small advantage here.
