The two ladies have never met before on the WTA Tour.
Kerber Finds her Rhythm on Grass
Following an eventful start to the season, where the German reached the semifinal in WTA Doha and the final in Indian Wells, she lost her footing on clay and consequently dropped out of the top five. Kerber lost quite early in Madrid and Roland Garros, sparking concerns of her loss in form.
However, she reinvented on the grass courts, winning five matches and losing just two. In Mallorca, she reached the semifinal and repeated a similar run in Eastbourne, where she was the runner-up. Nonetheless, Kerber will seek some consolation from the fact that she knocked out Simona Halep 6-4, 6-3 on the way there.
World No. 5 has always been a formidable player on grass, reaching the final at the SW19 twice in her career. She has achieved a lot on this surface and it is hard to imagine her falling to Maria.
Tatjana, Looking to Create some Magic
For her Wimbledon preparations, Maria played in an ITF event in Surbiton and the WTA event in Nottingham. She ended up performing fairly well in both of those tournaments, reaching the semifinal.
Before that, the 31-year-old struggled significantly with her form, landing just one win in her six previous tournaments, all of which were on clay. However, she had a much better run on the hard courts, reaching the fourth round in Miami and Newport Beach.
Despite her lack of show on the tour, Tatjana is certainly a formidable player capable of delivering results. However, it is to be seen how she will fare against someone who is in as scintillating form as Kerber.
Kerber v Maria Predictions & Tips
Kerber shouldn’t face any major difficulties in winning this match comfortably. She has the momentum, experience, and more importantly, the will to defend her title in London. Expect this one to be summed up in straight sets.
