Ashleigh Barty v Alison Riske Head to Head
The pair have played each other once before, in the semi-finals of the Eastbourne Trophy in 2016 played on grass. Riske won the match in straight sets, but Barty had just returned to the sport after her hiatus playing professional cricket. Three years further on, the 23-year old Australian is in a completely different place, and on the verge of dominating the women’s game.
Barty, Chasing Her Maiden Wimbledon Title
Barty seems to have everything going for her at the moment. Having won her maiden Grand Slam title in Paris, and assumed the world number one ranking, she is the hot favourite to add the Wimbledon crown this year as well, especially as the grass is her favourite surface.
She has breezed through her first three matches so far in the Championship, first beating Zheng Saisai of China in the first round, before cruising past the challenge of German Alison van Uyvtanck in the second. Britain’s Harriet Dark was then ruthlessly despatched for the loss of just two games in the third round on Saturday.
With Naomi Osaka and defending champion Angelique Kerber already out of the tournament, people are starting to ask who can stop Barty in her march to the title.
Riske, Best Wimbledon Performance
This is the tenth time that Riske has entered the main draw at Wimbledon, but the first time that she has made the fourth round. She has now equalled her best run in any Grand Slam event, emulating her feat at the US Open six years ago.
Riske has claimed a few notable scalps along the way. She began by defeating the number twenty-two seed, Donna Vekic of Croatia, coming from a set down to triumph in three sets. The American was taken to three sets again in the second round by Ivana Jorovic of Serbia and only got through by nine games to seven in the third. Saturday brought her a match against another seed, Belinda Bencic of Switzerland, and although she lost the first set, Riske battled back yet again to win.
Barty v Riske Predictions & Tips
Barty is the odds-on favourite to win not only this match at 3/19 but the tournament as a whole. Riske, who is priced at 5/1, is an accomplished grass court player: she won the Rosmaelen Championship in June and followed that up with victory in the Challenger event at Surbiton a week later. But she is playing a woman at the top of her form on her favourite surface. There can be only one outcome – a comprehensive Barty victory.
Tip: Barty to win in straight sets: 2/5 (888Sport)
