Aryna Sabalenka v Victoria Azarenka Head to Head
Despite being nearly contemporary countrywomen, it is surprising to see these two players haven’t played each other even once before this.
Sabalenka Looking for a Move Up
At number nine, this is Sabalenka career-best ranking but she has shown signs of not being in the best of her form since the end of the first tournament she played this year. At Shenzhen she looked at her best, winning five matches to lift the title but since then has reached the final of just one event – San Jose Open earlier this month.
What makes it worse for her is Sabalenka’s Grand Slam showing. After a third round exit at the Australian Open, she was sent packing in the second at the French Open and then an opening round ouster at Wimbledon. Well, one way to look at it is it cannot get worse for Sabalenka as far as her Grand Slam form is concerned, but a first round loss at the Toronto Open leaves her with more questions than answers.
Hard court is her favourite surface, on which she won a couple of titles last season as well, and she will take confidence from that and her fourth round appearance at US Open last year.

Mediocre Year Continues for Azarenka
Since winning the Miami title in 2016, Azarenka hasn’t won anything, and for a variety of reasons. This year she did make it to the final at the Monterrey Open but had to retire from that match against Garbine Muguruza after being a set down.
And that tournament aside, Azarenka’s best showing this year has been a quarter-final at Stuttgart and another last-eight appearance at the Rome Open. Her troubles are pronounced in recent times on the US swing, with second round defeats at each of the previous three tournaments she has played in – at San Jose, Toronto and Cincinnati. Two of these losses have come against Donna Vekic.
Azarenka has had a decent time at the US Open, having made the final twice – losing to Serena Williams both times – and made the third round last year too. But can she get past a higher-ranked, and a younger player in Sabalenka?
Sabalenka v Azarenka Predictions & Tips
Sabalenka will be a favourite in this one given Azarenka’s form but if you are looking at a value proposition, consider a three-setter in this encounter irrespective of the result. Azarenka’s fighting spirit will come to the fore and one can expect her to take it to the third set.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 7/5 (888Sport)
