Denis Shapovalov v Henri Laaksonen Head to Head

Shapovalov and Laaksonen will meet for the first time.

Shapovalov Beat Countryman Auger-Aliassime To Make Round Two

Denis Shapovalov won the battle between two of the brightest young talents in the men’s game when saw off fellow Next Gen star Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets on Tuesday. It was the second straight meeting at the US Open between the pair, and it was the 20-year-old Shapovalov who avenged last year’s defeat (albeit via a retirement) at the same stage against his compatriot.

Shapovalov salvaged some form in the build-up to the US Open as he reached the semifinals in Winston-Salem, losing out to the eventual champion Hubert Hurkacz.

Since making the last four of the Miami Masters at the end of March, the Canadian’s form tailed off alarmingly. He played dismally throughout the European clay-court and grass-court swings, losing in the first round in 7 of 9 tournaments he played between Monte Carlo and Wimbledon.

The Next Gen star suffered as a result as he missed out a seeding spot at the final Grand Slam of the year. But that could be a blessing in disguise as Shapovalov has a very winnable second round match against Henri Laaksonen.

Laaksonen’s Never Won A Main Draw Match Here

Prior to his marathon five-set win against Marco Cecchinato in the first round, Henri Laaksonen was yet to win a main-draw match at the US Open.

The largely unpopular Swiss player trailed the his Italian opponent 3-1 in the final set, but managed to secure the victory by winning in all three tiebreaks contested in the match.

The reward for Laaksonen is a second round appearance at the final major of the year to combine with his other two successes this year at the Australian Open and French Open where he also made the second round for the first time. The 27-year-old is currently outside the top-100 in the ATP Rankings and will need to play better than what his current ranking suggests, if he is to cause an upset on Thursday against the much-fancied Shapovalov.

Shapovalov v Laaksonen Predictions & Tips

Shapovalov made light work of Auger-Aliassime, a result that many did not see coming especially when you take into account that he had gone off the boil since Miami. But in tennis, a week can do wonders for confidence and Shapovalov’s run to the semis at Winston-Salem is case in point. He should be too good for Laaksonen who is uncharted territory at this stage.

Tip: Shapovalov to win in straight sets: 4/7 (888Sport)
