Matteo Berrettini v Gael Monfils Head to Head
The pair have never met before. This will be the first encounter between the 23 year old Italian, and the Frenchman, ten years his senior.
A Maiden Grand Slam Quarter-Final for Berrettini
Berrettini finds himself in the quarter-final of a Grand Slam for the first time, after an impressive straight sets win over the unseeded Russian Andrey Rublev in the fourth round on Monday. He won the first two sets comfortably, and served for the match at 6-5.
Although the Russian then broke him for the first time in the match, Berrettini went on to win the ensuing tie-break to clinch the match.
After his win, Berrettini was quick to acknowledge the help and advice of Corrado Barazzuti, the only Italian who has ever got to the semi-finals at the US Open, losing to Jimmy Connors in 1977, and who is now Italy’s Davis Cup captain.
He also credited his coach for teaching him how to play the one-handed backhand slice shot, which was particularly effective against Rublev, and which has become one of the main weapons in his armoury in New York.

Monfils, A Fourth US Open Quarter-Final
Monfils is into his fourth US Open quarter-final, and will be hoping to match at least his best ever run here from three years ago, when he lost a somewhat controversial semi-final to Novak Djokovic.
The number 13 seed began his campaign in New York with two easy matches, overcoming both Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain and Marius Copil of Romania, without dropping a set to either.
By contrast, his third round encounter with Denis Shapovalov of Canada was an epic see-saw battle that ebbed and flowed, with first one man, and then the other, seizing the advantage, before Monfils secured the all-important service break in the final set to close out the match.
That earned him a fourth round tie with the unseeded Spaniard Pablo Andujar, and he breezed past the Spaniard in just an hour and twenty six minutes, losing just five games without conceding a single break point in the entire match.
Berrettini v Monfils Predictions & Tips
Monfils is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 11/17, whilst Berrettini is priced at 6/4. The Italian has played very well to get this far in this tournament, but he will be playing in his first Grand Slam quarter-final, whilst Monfils will be featuring in his ninth. That greater experience may give the Frenchman the edge,
Tip: Monfils to win in four sets: 10/3 (888Sport)
