Rafael Nadal v Diego Schwartzman Preview & Tips:

Two good friends on and off the court, Rafael Nadal and Diego Schwartzman meet for the eighth time in their US Open quarter-final at Arthur Ashe stadium. Nadal remains unbeaten in this match-up with a convincing 7-0 head-to-head.

Nadal is looking for a fourth US Open title, and looked to be playing at a very high level. A couple of easy first rounds was followed by a more challenging opponent in 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, against whom Nadal put up a stellar display after losing the second set, to wrap up in four. The Spaniard, in the absence of the world number one Novak Djokovic is a strong favorite for a 19th major title.

Gritty Argentine Diego Schwartzman is in his third major quarter-final at the back of his 2017 US Open and 2018 French Open appearances. Schwartzman was on the verge of the top ten rankings in early 2018 but has fallen out of the top 20 this season with some indifferent results.

He has had a good US Open thus far with a strong showing in his fourth round encounter against 2018 ATP Tour Finals winner Alexander Zverev, winning in four sets after losing the opener. With strong groundstrokes and great coverage, he has put up some spirited performances in recent times on different surfaces.

Nadal v Schwartzman Prediction:

While this makes for an entertaining match between two players with the ability to run and hit the ball all over the court, whatever Schwartzman does well, Nadal does better. That is the primary reason for the 7-0 head-to-head in the Spaniard’s favor.

As seen before, the Argentine can keep up with Nadal’s aggression and level of play for short intervals and maybe even take a set, but with a slower serve and lacking plenty of variety, he will find it hard to outplay Nadal in his current form. Expect Nadal to qualify for the semi-finals in straight sets.

Tip: Nadal to win three sets: 1/2 (888Sport)

Gael Monfils v Matteo Berrettini Preview & Tips:

Of all the men’s quarter-finals, this is likely to be the least unexpected at the start of the tournament. Some good play by both players and the luck of the draw have seen them through to the final eight. The two have never met before on tour and this will be their first ever meeting.

Veteran Frenchman Gael Monfils had a good start to the season with some deep runs on the indoor hard courts in Europe including a win at the ATP 500 in Rotterdam. He ran into some recurring injury issues mid-season, but has since returned to the North American hard courts looking healthy and in good form.

The 2016 US Open semi-finalist is knocking on the doors of the top ten of the ATP rankings again, and has had a solid run at the US Open thus far. He played a five-set thriller in the third round putting up a classic display against spirited young Canadian Denis Shapovalov. He followed this with a very convincing straight set win against Spanish veteran Pablo Andujar, and looks focused and firing on all cylinders, in his ninth major quarter-final

Rising Italian star Matteo Berrettini has had a very impressive last few months, winning the ATP 250 at Stuttgart on grass, followed by a semi-final appearance at Halle. He did well to make the fourth round at Wimbledon, before he was convincingly beaten by Swiss legend Roger Federer.

However, he has had a good year overall, in the top 25 of the ATP rankings and with a 3-1 record against top ten ranked players. With a solid serve and powerful groundstrokes and good net coverage, he has done well to make the quarter-finals this fortnight. The Italian comes into the final eight at the back of a convincing straight set win against Andrei Rublev, who himself has been in excellent form.

Monfils v Berrettini Prediction:

While this is a match-up of unknowns for either player, Monfils will start as favorite primarily based on his experience on the tour and having been on a similar stage before. On the other hand, Berrettini will look to make the most of the situation and hope to play without added pressure.

It promises to be a good contest between two players with powerful ball striking ability and big serving. Expect Berrettini to play at a much better level than his last high stake match at Wimbledon, but a Monfils win in four close sets seems to be the most likely outcome.

Tip: Monfils to win in four sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
