Osaka had stunned the tennis world last year by going on to win the US Open in 2018 and then reaffirmed that victory was no fluke by clinching the Australian Open title in fine style earlier this year.
Her form fell away in comparison with her own lofty standards through the rest of the year. However, while she was knocked out of the US Open in the fourth round, she is still one of the top players tipped to defend her Australian Open title next year.
Osaka, however, has fallen to number four in the bookmakers’ pecking order – behind Serena Williams, Bianca Andreescu and Simona Halep.
Now it comes as no surprise that not too many want to bet against Serena finally winning that elusive Grand Slam, her first since her return from the birth of her child. She has reached four Grand Slams and lost each time – every time to a different opponent – but it does look it is a matter of when and not if she wins that major.
After the US Open 2019 final, Serena said:
“I love Bianca. I think she’s a great girl. But I think this was the worst match I’ve played all tournament. It’s hard to know that you could do better. At the same time it’s inexcusable for me to play at that level.”

Now while she might have been right about the manner in which the final went, Serena’s game has shown considerable improvement since her way back to tennis. Right throughout the US Open, Serena almost destroyed her opponents, and barring her second round match against Caty McNally when she was stretched to three sets, she lost more than three games in a set just once.
Which is probably why she is back at pole position with an offer of 6/1 for her win at the next Grand Slam. Serena Williams has already pocketed seven Australian Open titles, and an eighth one could be on unless someone can step and overcome her.
And that someone could be Andreescu yet again, if she can maintain her fitness. The Canadian was mesmerising in the US Open final last week but she has been away from the game for a while because of injury issues and it would be interesting to watch how the rest of the season goes for her.
Now ranked fifth in the world, Andreescu is gunning for the WTA Finals, but her main test will come in the season following this brilliant one that has already seen her at the Indian Wells Open, Rogers Cup and now the US Open. Can she pocket the Australian Open title as well next year?
Interesting to note she had to play the qualifiers to make it to the main draw at the Australian Open last year and lost in round two of the competition. After that, she’s lost just two more matches all year and as a result will be the second favourite at 7/1 to win the Australian Open 2020 title.
Simona Halep’s fine Wimbledon win has been followed by a string of underwhelming results as well, with the 27-year-old having lost at the quarter-finals in Toronto, third round in Cincinnati and second at the US Open. She is 10/1 to win the title along with defending champion Naomi Osaka, who is 10/1 as well, with the Japanese’s form having dipped considerably since her win at the Australian Open earlier this year.
Osaka has won 20 and lost 12 since lifting that title in January and the question is if she can turn things around quickly enough.
World number one Ash Barty is 12/1 following her French Open win while Karolina Pliskova might not have won a single major yet, but her consistency puts her at 14/1 to lift the trophy come February 2020.
US Open semi-finalist Elina Svitolina (18/1), last year’s Australian Open runner-up Petra Kvitova (25/1) and Angelique Kerber (25/1) are some of the other contenders at the next Grand Slam.
