Magda Linette v Fangzhou Liu Preview:
Magda Linette, who is a world number 45 from Poland, will be up against the 263rd-ranked local, Fangzhou Liu and surprise, surprise, they have played once before this. It was a match at the Kuala Lumpur Open in 2015 and Linette had wasted no time in getting past Liu, winning 6-2, 6-1.
Linette is coming off some good form under her belt with a title win at the WTA New York and a second round appearance in the US Open where she was packed off by Naomi Osaka. In fact that title victory was her first in five years which would give her a tremendous boost even in this tournament, something on show Giuliana Olmos in the first round.
Liu, who had once climbed up to 127th in the world, was a quarter-final at this competition last year and in 2016, but needed three sets in her first round match. Before that she had lost back to back matches on the ITF circuit and Linette, with her form and confidence should have no trouble sailing past Liu.

Rebecca Peterson v Jana Fett Preview:
As one-sided matches go, this match is probably closer in balance than the Linette-Liu one but only just. The odds for a Peterson win are 1/6 while Fett begins at a distance 24/5. The rankings suggest this could be even more one-sided what with a 78th-ranked player taking on a 326th-placed one, especially since Peterson has shown some form in the lead-up.
She went through the qualifiers at Cincinnati to make it past rounds one and two that included a win over Johanna Konta. Peterson also made the second round at the US Open too, and then here, in her first round match she routed Fang Ying Xun 6-0, 6-3.
Fett is 6-6 on hard court surfaces this year on the ITF circuit, having qualified just once before this in a WTA event this season. She had a tough opening outing, needing three sets to set up this meeting but by the looks of it, this will be as far as she would go.

Viktorija Golubic v Lara Arruabarrena Preview:
These two players have never played each other before but Golubic, on account of his better ranking of 76th as opposed to her opponent’s 177th is the favourite. Not by much though. While she starts off at 4/7, Arruabarrena is 13/8 to win this.
However, in terms of form, it’s been a tough few weeks for both, especially since the end of July. Golubic has struggled to get a hold on the hard-court season after a decent grass swing while Arruabarrena opted to not play on grass and since that switch to hard courts, has had her own issues. This makes for an interesting match-up and one that could be error-filled but might go the distance.

Kateryna Kozlova v Dalila Jakupovic Preview:
In their only previous match-up, Jakupovic, who is currently ranked 80 places behind her opponent Kozlova, had won the match in three sets at Luxembourg. Since then, however, Jakupovic has struggled and this year has been her worst till date.
Of the 42 matches Jakupovic has played this season, she has won just 12, including her first round encounter here – a 6-1, 6-1 drubbing of Sara Errani, the former world number five. That stalled her five-match losing streak but it was more an Errani problem – she has had a huge struggle since trying to make a comeback – and her real test will come against Kozlova.
Kozlova herself was on a six-match losing streak but a 6-2, 6-1 win over the 40-year-old Greta Arn should help. In such a situation, we think this could be a quick one for whoever takes the early initiative with a very low number of games.
