Magda Linette v Rebecca Peterson Preview:
Third seeded Polish player Magda Linette plays the fifth seeded Rebecca Peterson in what can be expected to be a tight encounter, as was the case in their only previous meeting which was held in 2019. Peterson had won that one in three sets after losing the first set in a tie-breaker and while she is ranked 33 places behind Linette, that win should bring her some confidence going into this one.
That said, Linette isn’t half as good a clay court player as she is on hard courts by this year’s performances. She is 2-7 on clay to 22-11 on hard courts, having also won the New York Open earlier. So while Peterson’s win, that came on clay, is a good starting point for the Swede, Linette will start off a favourite.
Interestingly, the odds have Linette as favourites too but only just. She is 41/50 to win this as compared to 1/1 for a Peterson win and we would take those odds for the Pole and install her as our favourite too.

Elena Rybakina v Viktorija Golubic Preview:
This will be the first match between Rybakina and Golubic, two players ranked rather closely at 69th and 76th respectively on the WTA ranking charts. Sixth seeded Golubic was a straight-set winner over Jaqueline Cristian in her first round match before dropping a set and defeating Lara Arruabarrena in her second.
Rybakina was stretched to three sets by Ankita Raina before winning against Xin Wang in straight sets to set up this meeting with Golubic. And even on hard court surfaces, there has been little to separate them, which gives an impression this could go the distance.
While Rybakina, on account of her slightly better ranking starts off 8/13 favourite to win, we would be better off going for the set-betting on this one and a three-setter looks like what we have in the offing.

Kateryna Kozlova v Nina Stojanovic Preview:
Kateryna Kozlova is ranked 74th in the world to her opponent’s 134th but dig deeper into recent times and Nina Stojanovic sounds like she is in the form of her life. Obviously, the competition has been at a slightly lower level at the US Open qualifiers and then at the Changsha ITF competition but since mid-August she has played 10 matches and lost a total of two sets – both coming in the final qualifier at the US Open against Taylor Townsend.
At this tournament itself, Stojanovic first crushed second seeded Wang Yafan and then overcame Samantha Stosur 6-4, 6-3 to proceed to the quarter-finals. What makes this a potentially exciting contest is her opponent, Kozlova, has had it easy too in Jiangxi, with straight-set wins over Sara Errani and Dalila Jakupovic.
Stojanovic starts a bookmakers’ favourite too at 8/13 to 5/4 for her opponent’s win but we think it could get a lot closer than that and three sets in the match looks a solid possibility.

Zhu Lin v Peng Shuai Preview:
Two Chinese players, Zhu Lin and Peng Shuai will contest the fourth quarter-final of the day to ensure one local player will playing in the semi-final. Both players are ranked outside the top 110 and incidentally their only previous match-up came at this very tournament in 2017. It was a quarter-final match too and Shuai had beaten Lin in straight sets in that one.
After a straight-set win in her opening round match, Lin was leading Zarina Diyas 6-0, 1-0 when her opponent retired from that second round. That means she has dropped a total of just four games over the two matches so far. On the other hand, Shuai was blanked in the second set of her second round match against Kateryna Pliskova before coming through in three sets.
What’s interesting to note is that Shuai starts off a favourite here, 10/13 for her win to 26/25 for Lin to make it through and we think there might be value in the Lin victory.
