Tennis News Today: Gunneswaran Enters Shanghai Challenger Quarter-Final

Prajnesh Gunneswaran has stormed into the qurterfinal of the 2019 ATP Shanghai Challenger by beating Goncalo Oliveira in straight sets on Thursday.

The top seeded Indian, who had a bye in the first round of the tournament, was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over his Portuguese opponent to move into the last-eight. He will now face the winner of the match between the eighth seeded Hiroki Moriya and tenth seeded Max Purcell in the next round.

Gunneswaran had earlier overcame Britain’s James Ward in his first round match, winning 6-4, 7-6 to set up this meeting.

Some of the other Indians who were in action at the Shanghai Challenger over this week but have been ousted already include Arjun Kadhe, Sidharth Rawat, Sasikumar Mukund and Saketh Myneni. While Kadhe and Mukund made the second round, Rawat was sent out in the opener by Hua Runhao. Myneni, a seeded player, had a bye to the second round where he lost a three-setter to Japan’s Shuichi Sekiguchi.

Meanwhile Sumit Nagal will be in action later today as well as he takes on Matija Pecotic of Croatia in his second round match at the 2019 Banja Luka Challenger. He had earlier defeated Ivan Nedelko in the first round of the tournament, winning 6-3, 7-6 to progress.

Nagal, ranked 174th on the ATP Rankings, had earlier said in an interview he thought he had a chance against Roger Federer in that eventful first round match at the US Open. He said his aim was to push the match into the fifth set but lost hold on his tactical plan and hoped he learns from his mistakes.
