Karolina Pliskova v Sofia Kenin Preview

This won’t be an easy encounter for Sofia Kenin, who has played Karolina Pliskova on three previous occasions and has won just one set so far. That previous encounter in which Kenin won that set, came at the Rome Open earlier this year on clay but on hard court surfaces, Pliskova has barely been stretched. Both those previous victories came at the US Open.

Pliskova has recently moved back up to the number two spot on the WTA rankings having had a 46-13 win-loss record this year. She was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Polona Hercog in the second round following a first round bye but not before she was down 2-5 in the second set overnight.

Kenin’s also showed good form with back to back semi-finals in Toronto and Cincinnati but a third round defeat at the US Open earlier this month would hurt. She will now want to push Pliskova to the distance but might not be able to surmount her.

Tip: Pliskova to win: 8/11 (888Sport)

Aryna Sabalenka v Petra Martic Preview

Fourth seeded Aryna Sabalenka was a straight-set winner over Jelena Ostapenko in the second round, dropping just three games in the process. And up against her in the quarter-final will be Petra Martic who was stretched to three by Finoa Ferro in her round of 16 encounter.

And this will be their second meeting in a span of around a month – second of their career too – with Sabalenka having eased past Martic in their previous encounter. That had come in Cincinnati.

Sabalenka’s not had the best of times this year, with a win-loss of 29-20, but at least on hard court surfaces it’s been better. The year had begun with a title win in Shenzhen and she would hope for the country to deliver her second such win but for now, the question is if she can repeat that against her Croat opponent.

Tip: Sabalenka to win: 8/11 (888Sport)

Ajla Tomljanovic v Zheng Saisai Preview

Unseeded Australian Ajla Tomljanovic had an easy opener against a qualifier but she would be particularly chuffed with her win over third seeded Kiki Bertens, whom she defeated 6-4, 7-6 to seal her quarter-final berth. And she will now take on Chinese player Zheng Saisai, who has had a reasonable draw so far.

Saisai beat Dutchwoman Bibiane Schoofs in her opener and with Alison Riske having taken out Angelique Kerber, the draw became even easier for her. She was a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Riske.

These two players have played each other twice before this and the head to head is tied at 1-1. Both those matches came earlier this year, both on hard court surfaces, and while Tomljanovic won at Hua Hin, Zheng responded in kind in Dubai.

Tip: Tomljanovic to win: 1/1 (888Sport)

Elina Svitolina/Yulia Putintseva v Kristina Mladenovic Preview

At the time of writing the Svitolina v Putintseva match is still going on with the winner set to take on Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic in the quarter-final. Mladenovic surprised eighth seeded and fellow countrywoman Caroline Garcia in her previous match after a straightforward win over Duan Yingying in her opener.

At the time of writing, Putintseva is leading Svitlina 4-2 in the opening set. With Mladenovic leading the head to head against Putintseva at 3-2 and not having played world number three Svitolina since 2011, it’s only fair to assume whom she would prefer playing in her quarter-final.
