Karolina Pliskova’s title win at the Zhengzhou Open helped her narrow the gap on the number one spot while the lack of ATP action meant Novak Djokovic remained the top-ranked player for the 269th week now.

While quite a few of the top women’s players took a break from the sport following the US Open, Pliskova was one of those in action. So was Elina Svitolina. And a bunch of others featuring in three of the WTA competitions.

Pliskova went on to defeat the seventh seeded Petra Martic in the final of the Zhengzhou Open. In doing so, she not just earned herself some valuable WTA rankings points but also became the second player to qualify for the year-ending WTA Finals. Ash Barty, the current world number one is the other.

The other two players who won the tournaments this year include Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson who swooped the Nanchang Open and Nao Hibino, who won the WTA Japan Open by beating fellow Japanese player Misaki Doi in the final.

Peterson is now ranked 52nd in the world while Hibino has risen to 89th from her outside the top 140 in the WTA rankings last week.

There is no change in the top 25 of the women’s rankings though, but Garbine Muguruza has moved up one place along with Maria Sakkari and Dayana Yastremska (two places) while Amanda Anisimova is down three places.

With no ATP action in the offing, Djokovic continued to hold on to the number one spot on the ATP charts, making it his 269th week as the top-ranked player in the world. That pushed him past Jimmy Connors who finished his career at 268 weeks.

This puts him at the number four spot behind Ivan Lendl (270 weeks), Pete Sampras (286) and Roger Federer (310) as the number one player.
