Karen Khachanov v Joao Sousa Head to Head

The pair have met once before, Khachanov winning on the outdoor hard courts of Chengdu in 2016 in straight sets.

Khachanov, Looking to Step Out of Medvedev Shadow

Khachanov began the year as the top ranked player in Russia, and number eleven in the world. Although he struggled for form during the first five months of the year, his performance at Roland Garros, where he reached the quarter-final of a Grand Slam for the first time, seemed to hint at better things in store for the 23 year old.

However, since then, he has had to take a backseat as his friend and compatriot Daniil Medvedev has grabbed all the headlines with his string of finals during the US hard court season. And when Khachanov did make a break through at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, reaching his first Masters semi-final, it was Medvedev who eventually beat him.

Khachanov will be keen to remind the Russian public this week that he is still one of the best players in the world.

Sousa, Best-Ever Portuguese Player

30 year old Sousa is widely regarded as the best player ever to come out of Portugal, and was the first to win an ATP career title, when he triumphed in Kuala Lumpur back in 2013. Two more tournament victories followed, at Valencia in 2015, and in Estoril last year, but he has rarely looked like adding to that haul this year, as he has gradually slipped down the ATP rankings.

Arguably his best performance of the year came at Wimbledon, where he equalled his strongest result in a Grand Slam by reaching the fourth round. He also got to the semi-finals in Gstaad.

He began his week here though in comfortable fashion, beating the Slovak Jozef Kovalik in straight sets on Wednesday

Khachanov v Sousa Predictions & Tips

Khachanov is the clear favourite to win this match at 29/100, whilst Sousa is priced at 51/12. The Russian will be desperate to impress in front of his home fans and, with a potential re-match against Medvedev in the final on the cards, will not let this chance slip.

Tip: Khachanov to win in straight sets: 2/3 (888Sport)
