Borna Coric v Casper Ruud Head to Head

The pair have  never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 22 year old Croat and the Norwegian, two years his junior.

Coric, Season Hampered by Injury

Coric finished last season on a high, reaching his maiden Masters final in Shanghai last October, and helping his country win the Davis Cup.

He began this year full of optimism, and surpassed Marin Cilic to become Croatia’s number one player, after reaching the fourth round in Melbourne,  and the semi-final in Dubai. He then reached the quarter final of the Miami Masters.

However, since then he has been plagued with a persistent back problem. He withdrew from Halle, and was forced to miss Wimbledon altogether. And although he did enter the US Open, he was forced to withdraw before his second round match with Grigor Dimitrov with a recurrence of the problem.

Thursday here was his first match since Flushing Meadows and it was, ironic, perhaps, that it was his opponent this time, Marton Fucsovics of Hungary, who had to retire with injury, with the score one set all, but Coric three-love up in the third.

Ruud, Top 100 Player and First ATP Final

20-year old Ruud is a former number one junior player, the first Norwegian to hold such a distinction.

Since progressing through to the senior ranks, he has continued to edge up the ladder, and broke in to the world’s top 100 for the first time earlier this year. He also reached his first ATP final, at the US Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston in April, losing to Christian Garin of Chile in three sets.

He has also achieved his best sever showing at a Grand Slam and a Masters event, reaching the third round in both Paris and Rome.

Ruud takes his place in the quarter-finals after battling past Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in the first round after a tough three-setter, followed by a much more comfortable straight sets win over Salvatore Caruso of Italy on Thursday.

Coric v Ruud Predictions & Tips

Coric is the favourite to win this match at 8/15, whilst Ruud is priced at 19/5. Injury has forced Coric to miss so much tennis recently so, now apparently fully fit, he will be keen to resume the upward trajectory he was enjoying before his back problems.

Tip: Coric to win in three sets: 14/5 (888Sport)
