Matteo Berrettini v Egor Gerasimov Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first encounter between the 23-year-old Italian, ranked 13th in the world, and the player from Belarus, three years his senior, and ranked more than a hundred places below him.

Berrettini Carried New York Form to Russia

Berrettini entered this tournament with his confidence sky-high, after becoming the first Italian in 42 years to reach the semi-finals of the US Open, and having reached a career high world ranking of 13.

And to back that up, he has a highly successful past year or so on his CV, which has seen him reach four ATP finals, winning three of them – in Gstaad last year, and in Budapest and Stuttgart in 2019. For good measure, he also won the ATP Challenger event in Phoenix.

That confidence was in full evidence in his second round match on Thursday, as he dismissed the challenge of the Spaniard, Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets, losing just three games in the process.

Gerasimov, In Unchartered Territory

26-year-old Gerasimov has been a pro for nine years but has never been ranked higher than 121 in the world – although he is playing close to that ranking at the moment.

He spends most of his time playing the junior ITF circuit, where he has had some success, winning 9 titles, the most recent of which came in Guzzini in Italy in July.

On the senior tour he is largely to be found in qualifying competitions, but he did manage to make the main draw in the last three Grand Slams of this year – at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows – and did achieve a personal milestone in New York by winning his first ever Grand Slam match.

Reaching the quarter-final of a tournament like this is a new experience for him, and he got here by beating Lukas Rosel of the Czech Republic in the first round, and then recording a highly impressive win over the experienced Frenchman, Adrian Mannarino, on Thursday.

Berrettini v Gerasimov Predictions & Tips

Berrettini is the overwhelming odds-on favourite to win this match at 5/18, whilst Gerasimov is priced at 11/4. The Italian is arguably in the form of his life, and he is playing a man who has no previous experience of being in the quarter-finals of such a prestigious event like this. Berrettini should win with ease.

Tip: Berrettini to win in straight sets: 2/5 (888Sport)
