Naomi Osaka v Kiki Bertens Head to Head
These two have played each other twice before this, and both have won one match apiece. The first came on the hard court of Acapulco in 2016 where Osaka came through in straight sets, while Bertens was leading by a set in the 2018 WTA Finals when Osaka retired from that encounter. There was a third match in the making at the Rome Open in 2019, but Osaka withdrew from it because of an injury.
Battle-Hardened Osaka Set for Quarterfinal Clash
If there were any doubts about Osaka’s rustiness from the lack of tennis since her withdrawal from the WTA Finals in October 2019, those looked to be dispelled with her performances in the first two matches in Brisbane.
After getting pushed to a third set by Maria Sakkari in the first round, Osaka was drawn to play Sofia Kenin in the second round of the Brisbane International. Kenin was expected to give Osaka a fight after the kind of year she had had, with some even expecting her to surprise the Japanese number one.
As it turned out, Osaka needed to overcome the loss of the first set in a tie-breaker before winning the next two to complete the win. Now, she takes on a top-10 player, in the form of Bertens who has troubled her in the past. However, as mentioned in our previous preview, Osaka has shown there has been spark in her performances after some middling form following her Australian Open victory last season.
Bertens in a Tough Spot of Her Own
If Osaka’s draw has been a tough one, it has been very little different for Bertens too, with two stiff matches to start things off. Dayana Yatremska was her first round opponent and Bertens needed a three-setter to get past her.
And if that was not enough, Anette Kontaveit took Bertens to a distance as well, winning the second set and only allowing the Dutchwoman to win the third 7-5. The match lasted a good two and a half hours or so and with Bertens now to play again in double-quick time after such a sapping match, it might get very tough against an opponent of that high a pedigree.
Bertens is coming off two title wins in 2019, but clay is her favourite surface with five of eight WTA titles coming on that surface. She has two on hard court too, but against a player who has won two Grand Slam titles on that surface, things are only going to get tougher.
Naomi Osaka v Kiki Bertens Predictions & Tips
Bertens is ranked ninth in the world and won’t be a pushover but Osaka’s grit and form makes her our favourite to win this one. Probably in straight sets too.
Tip: Osaka to win in straight sets: 11/10 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
