James Duckworth v Roberto Marcora Head to Head
This will be the first-ever meeting between the pair.
Duckworth’s Love with Pune Continues
The 28-year-old Australian came to Pune to play in a challenger event just three months ago. On that occasion, he went all the way and lifted the title. A victory that helped him to reach a top 100 ranking after two and a half years. Now he is back in Pune, seeded sixth this week and chasing another title. But this time on the ATP tour level.
Duckworth was a top 100 player back in 2015 and achieved several notable results at the time. But a spate of injuries meant that he could never play consistently. An elbow injury followed by a foot surgery meant that he only played only one match in the 2017 season. At one point of time, he fell out of the top 1000 in the rankings.
But after regaining his fitness, he showed some impressive form last year. Although playing primarily on the challenger level, he achieved decent success. He won four challenger titles and managed to reach the main draws at three Grand Slams. Currently ranked 96 in the world, another victory will take him close to achieving his career-best ranking of 82.
Marcora Took Out the Top Seed in the Previous Round
The 30-year-old Italian has spent the best part of his more than a decade long career outside of the top 200 in the rankings. But 2020 has been a year of new highs for Marcora. He began the year by reaching the quarter-finals at Noumea Challenger, a result that got him to his best ranking of 171.
He followed it up with reaching the second round of the Australian Open, another career-best performance for him. And now, here in Pune, he is in the last eight and has just beaten world number 19, Benoit Paire.
He beat the top seed in straight sets and has not dropped a single set this week in Pune. His run is even more impressive considering that he started from the qualifying rounds.
