Kyle Edmund v Taylor Fritz Head to Head
The pair have played each other once before, in the semi-final at Eastbourne last year, Fritz winning in straight sets.
Edmund Hoping to Make it His Second Title
Only the sixth British man in the modern era to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam, in Melbourne in 2018, Edmund, after winning his maiden ATP title at the European Open in Antwerp later than same year, then endured a difficult 15 months, as he struggled for form and consistency.
Beginning 2019 in the world’s top twenty, that run to the semi-finals in Eastbourne was a rare highlight, as he ended the season down at 69 in the rankings.
2020 has begun better though. He began his year in Auckland where he reached the quarter-finals before losing to John Isner, although Melbourne was a disappointment this time – he was beaten in straight sets in the first round by the Serb Dasun Lajovic.
However, in New York, he claimed his second ATP title, beating Andreas Seppi of Italy in straight sets in the final.
And, having defeated the veteran Spaniard Federico Lopez in the first round in Acapulco, he had a fine straight sets win over the Canadian teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime, the number four seed, who had already made two finals in Europe this month.
Fritz Searching for Form in 2020
Fritz had something of a career breakthrough in 2019, enjoying a real purple patch in the middle of the season when he won his first ATP title in Eastbourne, and made two other finals, first in Atlanta, and then in Los Cabos, Mexico.
That run propelled him to a new career high world ranking of 25, though he has slipped some ten places since then.
2020 has not gone according to plan, though, so far for the 22 year old American. He lost both matches playing for the USA in the ATP Cup, and, was beaten in straight sets by Alexander Bublik in Adelaide. Fritz did make the third round in Melbourne, beating Kevin Anderson along the way, but was beaten by Dominic Thiem.
He then chose to enter the Challenger event in Newport Beach but was knocked out in the second round, and suffered another first round defeat in Delray Beach last week.
However, he has had two good wins so far in Mexico, beating the experienced John Millman of Australia in three sets in the first round, and then the up and coming young French star Ugo Humbert, in the second on Wednesday.
