Cristian Garin v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head

This is the first time that the world number 18 Cristian Garin and 98th-ranked Fokina will be going head to head.

Garin on a Nine-Match Streak

Six matches into the season, Cristian Garin wasn’t sure where his next win was going to come from. He had been thrashed in straight sets in three matches at the 2020 ATP Cup to begin the year, and then lost in the first round at the Adelaide International to Lloyd Harris.

At the Australian Open he finally opened his account with an opening round victory but Milos Raonic registered a crushing, straight-set win in the second round to end his hard court swing on a horrible note.

Two tournaments in the clay court swing and Garin has looked invincible. At Cordoba he made the final where he defeated Diego Schwartzman in three sets to lift the title and then repeated the dose at the ATP Rio two weeks later. From 1-5 on win-loss he has gone up to 10-5 and things are looking rather strong for him.

He now opens his campaign to make it three title wins in a row against the 98th-ranked Fokina and on paper should have absolutely no worries.

Fokina with Underwhelming Results This Season

Like Garin, Fokina’s issues on hard court surfaces this year meant his best result was the second round at the Australian Open. That had been preceded by his failure to qualify for the Doha Open and a first round exit at Auckland.

However, unlike Garin, his problems have only compounded on clay.

It started with a shock defeat at the hands of Hernan Casanova, a 364th-ranked player, in the qualifiers, at the Buenos Aires Open, went on to another defeat in the round one at the Rio Open and now even the win here in Chile Open first round took him three gruelling sets.

Unless he can quickly get into his groove and find the kind of rhythm which had seen him graduate from the lower circuits over the past two seasons, this looks to be headed only one way for Fokina. Against him.

Cristian Garin v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Predictions & Tips

Garin should have no worries here. He has had a decent break between the last tournament and this one, there is no question of rustiness and the form on clay is second to none. Straight-setter.
