Johanna Konta v Kirsten Flipkens Head to Head

There have been five matches between Konta and Flipkens before this and the Brit has won four of them. Two of these meetings came on the ITF circuit where Konta won in straight sets, before Flipkens had her revenge at the Monterrey Open in 2016.

Since then, they have played at the 2017 Australian Open and the 2018 Miami Open and Konta won on both occasions in straight sets.

Konta’s Poor Run Continued after the Break

Sure, Konta made it to the semifinal at the Monterrey Open earlier this year but even that would have come as a relief for the Brit. Because before that, Konta was on a three-match losing streak to kick-start his season.

She lost to Barbora Strycova in the Brisbane International, then went down to Ons Jabeur at the Australian Open before crashing to Oceane Dodin at the St. Petersburg Open – all of which came in the opening round.

At Monterrey, Konta sent out Kim Clijsters in a fighting match, almost muffing it up before winning a couple more matches. Those three wins proved to be her only victories of the season so far.

Resuming the WTA tour at the Lexington Open, one thought she might be slightly better prepared having played in the Battle of the Brits, but went down to Marie Bouzkova in the first round. Again.

Now with an opening round bye, a second round match against a qualifier, and if she wins, another qualifier waiting for her in the third round too, Konta couldn’t have hoped for a better draw than this. Will she make the most of it?

Flipkens Wins First Match of the Season

As far as main draws of WTA events go, Flipkens hasn’t won too many in recent times. In fact, the last she won one was way back in October 2018 in Moscow. A couple of surprise wins took her to the quarterfinal where she lost to Belinda Bencic.

Since then Flipkens has featured in a few competitions including five this year but never won an opener. That’s till she entered the Cincinnati Open as a qualifier.

Faced with a reasonably easier qualifying rounds, a 107th-ranked Katarina Zavatska and 350th-ranked Katie Volynets in those two matches, Flipkens not only defeated the two of them but also went one better. In his opener here in the Western & Southern Open, Flipkens registered a 6-3, 6-3 win over Katerina Siniakova to march into the second round.

And much like Konta couldn’t have hoped for a better draw, Flipkens is facing a rather out of form top-eight seed and might even fancy her chances here.

Johanna Konta v Kirsten Flipkens Prediction & Tip

Konta is the on-paper favourite with an offer of 4/9 for her win but Flipkens could push her a tad. We could see three sets in the match.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 13/8 (bet365)
