Daniil Medvedev v Aljaz Bedene Head to Head
This is a first meeting on tour between these two players.

Medvedev Begun Title Defense in Style
Daniil Medvedev made a winning start to his title defence on Monday when he overcame a spirited performance from qualifier Marcos Giron, 6-4 6-4, to book his spot in the third round. It was the Russian’s first tour-level match since February when he lost in the quarterfinals of the Open 13 Provence to Gilles Simon.
Medvedev, who beat David Goffin in last year’s final which was held traditionally in Cincinnati, is seeking to capture his first title of 2020.
The 24-year-old made waves beginning with last year’s American hard-court swing, reaching the final in six consecutive tour-level events. That astonishing streak yielded two Masters 1000 titles (Cincinnati and Shanghai), a 250 in St. Petersburg, and a maiden Grand Slam final at the US Open where he pushed Rafael Nadal to his absolute limits in a classic final.
In the absences of Roger Federer and Nadal, the World No.5 still remained skeptical on his chances of winning that elusive Grand Slam crown in New York. He came mighty close last year when his spectacular comeback from two sets down took him to within touching distance of snatching the US Open title – a performance which drew glowing praise from Nadal himself.
Medvedev set the bar so high last autumn such that he has found it very difficult to impose himself this year. Could a return to the Western & Southern Open get his campaign up and running?

Qualifier Bedene Has A Spring In His Step
Not many people would have given Aljaz Bedene a remote chance of making it this far. Having beaten Denis Kudla and Dennis Novak in the qualifiers, he was paired against one of the tour’s best-performing players in Cristian Garin. However, the Chilean doesn’t boast the greatest of records on hard courts, and his three-set defeat came as no surprise.
It was Bedene’s second round win over Taylor Fritz which raised a few eyebrows. The American was in peak condition coming into New York after playing a series of exhibition tournaments on hard courts. That, coupled with his demolition of South Africa’s Lloyd Harris in the first round, made him an overwhelming favorite. Yet he squandered a 3-1 lead in the first set to lose 7-6 7-5.
The Slovenian will have a shot at registering a third top-10 win of his career and his second this season after shocking Stefanos Tsitsipas in Rotterdam.
If Bedene can master merging his aggression with baseline solidity, he can cause plenty of problems to Medvedev who needs matches to find his rhythm.
Medvedev v Bedene Prediction & Tip
Medevedev naturally starts this one as the odds-on favorite. Given his below-par start to the year, I feel he has a point to prove during the American hard-court swing. Expect him to motor away past the Slovenian in style.
Tip: Under 20.5 games: 5/6 (bet365)
