McHale Made Round Three Last Week
After a second round appearance at the Auckland Open at the beginning of the season, the former world number 24 struggled at both, Hobart International and the Australian Open. She went out in her openers at both.
This was followed by a quarterfinal showing at the Newport Beach Open, before she defeated Lauren Davis and Caroline Dolehide to make it to the last-eight stage of the Acapulco Open as well.
Featuring in the World TeamTennis obviously kept her moving and in the absence of any rust, McHale won a couple of qualifiers at the Cincinnati Open before upsetting Iga Swiatek and Ekaterina Alexandrova in the main draw. She lost to Ons Jabeur in the third round.

Cirstea’s Won Just One Match This Year
The Romanian’s only win in a main draw of a WTA tournament came at the Australian Open where she managed to eke one past Barbora Strycova. Unfortunately, that was as far as she got in that tournament and in others too, with first round exits at Shenzhen, Dubai and Doha and a failure to qualify for the Hobart International.
And then having not played a single match during the pandemic break, Cirstea started off with a first round defeat on clay at Palermo to Sara Errani – a fellow veteran who has had her own struggles. At the Cincinnati Open which followed, the Romanian won the first qualifier, only to go down to Ana Kalinskaya in the second.
With struggles this profound it’s tough to see how Cirstea would manage to carve out a win here despite playing a unseeded player.
Christina McHale v Sorana Cirstea Prediction & Tip
McHale’s solid form in the Cincinnati Open and Cirstea’s recent struggles mean this should allow the American to start off as a favourite. She is 4/7 to win this, which is quite a value at this stage.
Tip: McHale to win: 4/7 (bet365)
