This will be the first meeting between the World No. 16 Khachanov and the World No. 37 Ruud.

Khachanov Eyes Success on Clay

One of the most improved players on the ATP tour over the last couple of years, 24-year-old Karen Khachanov has had a mixed year so far, but he will be hoping for better consistency on his preferred surface as the mini clay season begins in Rome on Monday.

The 11th seed Russian showed nerves of steel as he fought back from 2 sets down to win his first round match at the US Open against American Jannik Sinner. He was dominant against compatriot Andrey Kuznetsov in the second round, but was knocked out of the third round after another thrilling five-setter against quarterfinalist Alex de Minaur.

The aggressive 6’6” right-hander, who is known for his big serves, is 13-8 this year and is yet to reach a semifinal in 2020. A four-time winner on the Tour, Khachanov reached his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at Roland Garros in 2019. In the Round of 16, he defeated his idol Juan Martin del Potro in 4, but couldn’t match the class of eventual runner-up Dominic Thiem in the quarters, bowing out in straight sets.

Currently ranked 16th in the world, the Russian reached a career high of No. 8 after the French Open last year and will be hoping to break back into the top 10 by producing some good results over the next one month.

Last year, in Rome, Khachanov needed three sets to defeat Lorenzo Sonego and Roberto Bautista Agut before falling to Fernando Verdasco in another contest that went the distance. This year, he would aim for a better finish, but has a very tricky first-round match against another good clay court player in Ruud.

Ruud Eyes More Glory in 2020

Just like Khachanov, Casper Ruud, too, rebounded from a two-sets-to-none deficit to defeat American Mackenzie McDonald in the first round of the U.S. Open. He was dominant in his second-round match against Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori, but bowed out of the tournament after being outclassed by Matteo Berrettini in a three-set third round encounter.

The 21-year-old, who became the first Norwegian to win an ATP title when he defeated Pedro Sousa in the final of the Argentina Open this year, had also reached the third round of the French Open in 2019.

When it comes to Masters 1000 events, Ruud has made it to the third round only once, and that too was at the Italian Open last year.

13-7 this year, the World No. 37 is having a good year so far having won a title and reached the final of Chile Open. He will be aiming to carry that form to his favourite surface where he has shown a lot of promise.

Khachanov v Ruud Prediction & Tip

Ruud will prove to be a very tough opponent, but expect Khachanov to win in three.

Tip: Khachanov to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
