Nishioka, the Japanese Number Two
The number two ranked Japanese player after Kei Nishikori, Nishioka has been in two senior ATP finals. He won the Shenzhen Open in 2018, but suffered defeat in Delray Beach earlier this year, beaten in three sets by the American Reilly Opelka.
Both of those events were on hard courts, which is his favourite surface, as demonstrated by the fact that four of his five titles on the junior tours were also hard-court events.
He is less proficient on clay, as evidenced by the fact that he has only ever one a single match at Roland Garros, and has a poor record in the European clay court Masters events.
There was proof of that last week in Rome. Although he had an encouraging win over Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia, the world number 39 in the first round, he was then thrashed by Grigor Dimitrov in the second, winning just one game in a match that lasted less than an hour.

Koepfer, Surprise Quarter-finalist in Rome
Koepfer, the fourth ranked German player, comes into this home event in Hamburg buoyed by his exploits in Rome, where he reached the quarter-finals of a Masters event for the first time in his career.
And he claimed some notable scalps along the way, including Alex de Minaur, the world number 21, and Gael Monfils. It was the first time he had ever beaten a top-ten ranked player.
He eventually lost to Novak Djokovic, but took the second set off the world number one, and made him fight hard for his victory.
He is not renowned as a clay court player though, with his best result coming at the US Open last year when he reached the fourth round. He has never even been in the main draw at Roland Garros before, although that may change this year after his achievements in Italy.
However, he did win a clay court title in Orlando in his days playing on the Futures circuit three years ago.
Nishioka v Koepfer Prediction and Tip
Although Nishioka is the higher-ranked player, Koepfer is the man in form on clay after his exploits in Rome and will start the clear favourite, especially as he is playing in his home event, with a limited number of fans allowed each day to watch the matches in the stands to support him.
Tip: Koepfer to win: 2/3 (bet365)
