Nadal Wastes No Time in Round One

The Spaniard was on court for just over two hours as he completed a straight-set 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Egor Gerasimov in the first round of the competition.

There were very few nervy moments for Nadal, who got five chances to break his opponent and broke him every single time to advance to the second round. On the other hand, he faced just two break-points on his serve, losing it once but that was about as close that his opponent got to challenging him.

Nadal’s first break of serve came at 2-2 in the first set, and that was all he needed to clinch the set. He then broke Gerasimov for the second time at 1-1 in the second set and carried it through and through till the end of the set, easily clinching it 6-4 again.

It was at the start of the third set that the Spaniard might have been in a bit of trouble when his opponent first held on to open his account in the set and then shocked the world by breaking Nadal to go 2-0 up. Unfortunately for him, that was all that Nadal needed to up the ante and he did so with three successive breaks of serve to wrap up the match.

Playing in the second clay court tournament of the season, Nadal had gone down in the quarterfinals at the Rome Masters earlier this month. He admitted after the match things were a little different at Roland-Garros this year with the weather and conditions in general but promised one thing – he would keep fighting in his matches.

His second round opponent McDonald will hope he can find a way through that.

McDonald Enters French Open With a Protected Ranking

Having last won a first round match in an ATP tennis tournament in February, McDonald was coming into the French Open with back to back opening losses at the Cincinnati Open and US Open.

In fact at the latter, he managed to push Casper Ruud to five sets, which would have given him some confidence but having not played in a serious tennis competition all year, there would have been nerves entering the French Open on his protected ranking.

Drawn to play the 181st-ranked Steven Diez, McDonald dropped the first set but came through in four to make it to the second round of the French Open for the first time ever in his career. In fact, barring a shock fourth round appearance at the Wimbledon last year – where he beat Ricardas Berankis, Nicolas Jarry and Guido Pella – McDonald has never gone beyond round two at any Grand Slam.

And by the looks of things, he will have to create a major flutter to do that this year.

Nadal v McDonald Prediction and Tip

It’s 1/150 for a Nadal win and 1/6 for him to do that in straight sets. Looks like the latter is the best we can get given the difficulties in predicting the conditions.

Tip: Nadal to win in straight sets: 1/6 (bet365)
