Roberto Bautista Agut v Pablo Carreno Busta Head to Head

This will be the fifth meeting between both players on the ATP tour. The head-to-head is tied at 2-2. Agut won their only meeting on clay at the Rome Masters in 2020 in a final set. All other meetings have been on the hard courts and every match has gone to a decider, with Carreno Busta winning their last match at Rotterdam earlier this year.

Agut In Clinical Form

Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut has been among the more consistent players on the tour for the last season and a half. After a sub-optimal end to the hard court swing in New York, his return to the clay was mixed at the Hamburg Open with good wins against two time defending champion Nikoloz Basilashvili and in-form German Dominik Koepfer, before a defeat to eventual champion Andrey Rublev.

Seeded tenth at the French Open, Agut found himself in the same half of the draw as Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Denis Shapovalov, Matteo Berrettini and Daniil Medvedev, drawing French veteran Richard Gasquet in the opener. Although not what he was once upon a time, Gasquet is a former Grand Slam semi-finalist and knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level.

Despite a spirited start by Gasquet, breaking Agut twice in the first set, to be up 5-2, the gritty Spaniard dug in and fought back, to equalize the set first and then push it into the tie-breaker. Strong court coverage on both sides saw Agut hold his ground, and win the breaker 7-5 to take the set. The Agut comeback in the first set saw the tide turn and it was all one-way traffic there on. The Spaniard won the next two sets 6-2, 6-1 with a total of eight breaks of serve in the match for him.

This set up a second round match with little known Hungarian Attila Balazs, with Agut starting as the strong overwhelming favorite. The Spaniard only dropped six games in the match in what turned out to be a routine win, where although he did drop serve twice he broke the Balazs serve eight times.

The Agut serve, which is although not as big and attractive as some of the others, maintained its consistency with a 75% service percentage for the match.  A gritty, resolute and in-form Pablo Carreno Busta awaits in the round of 32.

Carreno Busta Looking For US Open Repeat

Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta, although a late bloomer has shown constant improvement in his game over the last few seasons. The 29-year-old Spaniard has not only won four ATP singles titles , but has made his presence felt in Grand Slams as well, reaching the semifinals of the US Open twice (2017 and 2020) and the quarterfinals of the French Open in 2017.

The 17th seed entered the 2020 French Open on the back of a fabulous U.S. Open showing, where he reached the final four before being edged out by Alexander Zverev in a five-set thriller.

It was not the easiest of draws for the US Open semi-finalist, whose only clay experience this season was a straight set loss to Rafael Nadal in the opener at Rome. Not only did Carreno Busta have the likes of Agut and Matteo Berrettini before the quarter-finals, his first two rounds were John Millman and Guido Pella, both tricky opponents and neither who goes away without a dogged fight.

Carreno Busta seems to have carried forward his US Open form to Paris, as he put up clinical displays against both, making use of the slower conditions with his excellent flat groundstrokes. Busta prevailed in straight sets against both Millman and Pella and will be no easy opponent for anyone here on.

Agut v Carreno Busta  Prediction and Tip

Although Agut has been the more accomplished player in recent times, Carreno Busta has been in excellent form through the last month or so.

A tight match between two dogged Spaniards awaits us; hard to pick a winner, but Agut may just clinch it in a decider.

Tip: Agut to win in five sets: 5/1 (bet365)
