Elina Svitolina v Nadia Podoroska Head to Head
This will be the first time that Svitolina and Podoroska will be facing off in a competitive match.

Svitolina Carves out Caroline
It took Svitolina a mere hour and some to breeze past previous scourge and local favourite Caroline Garcia in the fourth round of the competition. The Ukrainian third seed, who had entered Roland-Garros on the back of a title win at Strasbourg, defeated Garcia 6-1, 6-3 to reduce their head to head deficit to 3-2.
Barring an inexplicable bagel at the hands of Renata Zarazua, Svitolina hasn’t been tested too much throughout this tournament. In the first round, Varvara Gracheva was sent out in straight sets and after the Zarazua win in the second, Svitolina crashed Ekaterina Alexandrova’s hopes with a 6-4, 7-5 win.
Garcia had already defeated Anett Kontaveit in the first round her and then overturned a set deficit to send back Elise Mertens in the third round. Plus she had the advantage of the head to head.
The confidence wasn’t lacking. Except, it was the same for Svitolina and before she knew it, the world number five had hit the Frenchwoman with two breaks of serve. While Garcia got one of them back, Svitolina retaliated with two more in a row to win the set 6-1.
The second set started on a similar note for Svitolina, who broke Garcia in her very first service game, and that was followed by a couple of further breaks exchanged. Garcia needed to break back to try and establish parity in the set but Svitolina faced no break-points from there on to seal the victory and cement her third entry into the French Open quarterfinal.
Her previous two opponents were seeded seventh and third in those respective competitions. Now she is up against a 131st-ranked player.

Podoroska Bests Barbora in Round Four
When the season resumed after the pandemic break, Podoroska was looking to make it through to the main draw of WTA events. She got through to one in Palermo but lost in the first round and then failed to get to the main draw at the WTA Prague.
Her clay court swing took off at Prague, at the lower-circuit competition played there as she overcame five opponents to make it to the semifinal before falling to Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto. With the confidence soaring Podoroska then featured at the ITF tournament in Saint-Malo, where she went on to win her third title of the season.
And with that, she was also able to break into the top 130 of the rankings, having been outside 500 in 2018.
All of that wouldn’t have mattered too much from the perspective of the common fan had it not translated into something at the French Open. Because, thanks to her ranking, she had still needed to make it to the main draw through the qualifiers, something she had done just once at Grand Slams before this. In 2016.
What she has now managed to achieve has been extraordinary. Three wins to make the main draw and then four in the main draw for the first time – not just of a Grand Slam but any WTA event.
While Podoroska was fortunate her path to the fourth round had been cleared with the defeat of Victoria Azarenka, she had already defeated Yulia Putintseva in the second round. A win over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova took her to round four where she was set up against another player ranked outside the top 100, Barbora Krejcikova.
And while Krejcikova took the first set, it was all one-way traffic following that for Podoroska who refused to give up in a hurry. She would need to do something similar when she comes up against Svitolina but whatever the result, she has already broken into the top 75 of the rankings – something that should allow her to get through to the main draws of many of the tournaments.
Svitolina v Podoroska Prediction and Tip
Svitolina is 1/3 to go through to the semifinals and while she will be slightly more nervous here because she is expected to win, her form coming into the tournament to go with what she has done all French Open should make it hard to punt against her.
Tip: Svitolina to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
