Andrey Rublev v Norbert Gombos Head to Head
This will be the third meeting between the two players.
They each have one win against each other. Andrey Rublev’s win came in Barcelona in 2015 on a clay court. Norbert Gombos’ victory came in the Orleans Challenger in 2016 on an indoor hard court.

Rublev Chasing Fifth Title Of The Year
Following his recent exploits in his native Russia, Andrey Rublev earned his fourth title of the year after defeating Borna Coric in straight sets in the St. Petersburg Open Final.
He’s now tied with Novak Djokovic for most titles this year and should be buoyed by his recent activity to chase for title no. five.
Additionally, that win in the final was his 34th this year; a statistic that he only trails to Djokovic who boasts 37 wins thus far. So safe to say that the Russian is in some fine good form and company.
His ranking also moved up two spots from tenth to eighth after his win, which was a sure booster in the race to the ATP Finals, something that he’s looking to qualify for the first time in his career. A good performance in this tournament will therefore be vital in helping him get over the line to the London Finals.
Consequently, he’ll need a strong start in the tournament; one which will be crucial in helping him state his desire for back-to-back titles. And having suffered first-round elimination only once this entire year—plus a 7-1 record on indoor hard courts this year—there should be very little fear of him facing an upset against an unfancied qualifier.

Gombos Facing A Massive Task Ahead
Norbert Gombos did relatively well in the qualifiers to earn himself a place in the main draw. He defeated 34th ranked Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets in the first qualifier, although he’d entered the tie as the massive favorite in that one.
In the next qualifier, he had to come from a set down to defeat 529th ranked Vitaliy Sachko, but the argument can be made that such an affair should have never been as close as it turned out to be.
Now against Rublev, he faces a massive task, especially for someone who’s only played six main draw matches post-hiatus and lost half of them. Even though he can claim that he’s defeated Rublev once before, that result came four years ago against an 18-year-old rookie who’s since turned into one of the best players in the world.
Surprises do often happen, but this match seems as though it will be more straightforward than most.
Rublev v Gombos Prediction and Tip
With Rublev’s current run, it would be folly pitting anything against him. You should have total confidence in the Russian getting the win, and he seems equipped to do it within the fewest sets possible.
Tip: Rublev to win in straight sets: 4/7 (bet365)
