Jordan Thompson and Cameron Norrie had a first-round match to savor. Norrie took the first set 7-5 after recovering from an early setback.
Thompson broke him in the fourth game of the set and took a commanding 1-3 lead. Norrie, however, fought back. He broke Thompson in the subsequent game and recovered a later break point before crucially breaking Thompson in the set’s penultimate game to all but guarantee him the first set.
In the second set, they went toe to toe again. Each player broke the other once early on and the games went with serve until a tiebreaker was needed. In the tiebreaker, Norrie had match point but Thompson recovered to win the tiebreaker and the second set.
With this momentum, Thompson controlled the third set with ease, breaking Norrie twice to win the set 6-2.
That win was a huge confident booster for Thompson who had lost four of his last five matches and hadn’t even won a set in his last three tournaments. He had also seen a great dip in form from his 2019 performances that had seen him reach his career-high 43rd-place ranking, but will now be eager to carry on from such performances.

Ruusuvuori Hoping To Break Second Round Curse
He might be the favorite on the day, but Emil Ruusuvuori hasn’t had a great showing in 2020. In fact, he hasn’t made it past the second round of an ATP Tour level tournament in the entire year. This will be his ninth attempt of the year to try and break that seeming curse.
His only good run in 2020 came in the Canberra Challenger, where he made it to the final. Though it may be important to note that he made his ATP Tour main draw debut this year and had mostly played in challenger tournaments prior to this year, hence this likely struggle in the tour.
Additionally, for someone who was ranked outside the top 200 at the start of the season, he has seen a great surge in his rankings. He was even ranked 91st recently in September, his highest career ranking so far.
His most recent match in the tournament’s first round saw him dismantle Timofey Skatov in straight sets 6-2, 6-0, showing that he can turn up when he wants to.
He also boasts an incredible record on hard and indoor hard courts, having lost only 42 times out of 176 times played on both courts. In addition, he is an aggressive baseliner who greatly flourishes on such faster surfaces, and against Thompson will be looking to dictate play from the start.

Ruusuvuori might be a great choice with his odds nearing 1/2, but as the two players have shown, games and sets might be the more valuable options between these two.
