Federico Coria v Benjamin Bonzi Head to Head

Their only previous outing came on the Futures circuit where Coria crushed Bonzi 6-1, 6-2 to move into the second round of that event on clay.

Clay-Courter Coria with Chance of a Win

Coria has won all 10 of his lower circuit titles on clay and one look at his record on red dirt as compared to the other surfaces is enough to suggest he loves the surface. In fact till the start of this season, Coria had played a mere 13 matches on non-clay surfaces in his career and won just three.

This year, Coria has attempted to play more on hard court surfaces, winning three of his eight matches on it to to with a 2-3 record indoors. Mind you, this includes qualifying rounds which includes the two he played here at the Paris Masters.

While Coria won his first round of qualifiers in Paris, he was sent packing in straight sets in the second by Marco Cecchinato and only makes it to the main draw as a lucky loser. Earlier, he had featured in the Antwerp Open and made the main draw with a couple of wins before going down to Pablo Andujar.

He now faces an opponent who might be ranked 179th but has enjoyed his time out on hard court surfaces.

Bonzi Happy on Hard Courts

While most of his success has come at the Futures and Challenger circuit, Bonzi has given enough indication about his love for hard court surfaces.

This season, the French wild-card entrant here at the Paris Masters has played in 24 matches on hard courts, and won 21 of them including two Futures titles and one runner-up trophy at the Bangalore Challenger.

And while he was dumped out in the first round of the Hamburg Challenger last week, Bonzi did make it to the semifinal at the Istanbul Challenger, making this an interesting match-up for a place in the second round.

Why interesting? Because despite being ranked 90 places behind his opponent, Bonzi start off as a bookmaker’s favourite to win this.

Coria v Bonzi Prediction and Tip

Bonzi is a favourite here (4/7) and it comes as no surprise given how poor Coria’s record is on non-clay surfaces. We think Bonzi will win this but not before Coria can put up some sort of a fight in this encounter.

Tip: Bonzi to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
