David Goffin v Norbert Gombos Head to Head
Their only previous outing came in 2015, on the clay courts of the Monte-Carlo Masters which Goffin won in straight sets.

Goffin on a Four-Match Losing Streak
It’s been a forgettable season for the former world number seven, Goffin, who enters this tournament in Paris with a 12-11 win-loss record this season. This includes a four-match losing streak which started at the US Open and has gone on to see him crash out in the first rounds of the Rome Masters, French Open and the Antwerp Open as well.
And indoor surfaces aren’t Goffin’s much preferred ones either. At least not in the last couple of seasons in which he has won seven and lost 12 matches on them.
This year, he looked to have started off well indoors when he made it to the semifinal of the Montpellier Open, having gotten himself a first round bye but things haven’t looked as good since. There was a second round loss at the Rotterdam Open and a first round crash-out at Marseille before the pandemic break and the European Open after.
He did have another opening round bye here but coming into this second round match against a qualifier, his confidence might not be at the peak of its ability.

Gombos Looking to Get Back to Top 100
At 30 years of age, Gombos isn’t quite a youngster but he will aspire what most tennis players do – to break into the top 100, which makes qualifying for Grand Slams that much easier. Gombos is a former world number 80 but is currently 105th in the world and with a second round appearance at the Paris Masters already, he can expect to inch back towards the top 100.
He wouldn’t be satisfied by that alone after having after having sent out Pablo Cuevas and Radu Albot in the qualifiers and then defeated former world number 16 Marco Cecchinato in the first round. In fact that win over Cecchinato was a straightforward one, after he broke his opponent twice in the first set.
The second set proved to be a lot more competitive but Gombos always held the edge as he broke early and then clinched the tie-breaker 7-2.
Gombos’ indoor hard court showing this season has seen him play in six such tournaments and win two main draw matches just once – it came at the Montpellier Open where he reached the quarterfinal. More recently, he lost in the qualifiers at the Cologne and then in the first round of Vienna after winning a couple of qualifying rounds.
This time around he has a chance to go as far as the third round in a Masters tournament, an excellent going for a player who had never won a main draw match before this at an ATP 1000 event.
Goffin v Gombos Prediction and Tip
This is a tough one but one we will back Gombos to cause an upset. Under normal circumstances, a 14th-ranked player taking on someone from outside the top 100 should be better than just 1/2 to win it but Goffin’s form demands those odds be slashed for a Gombos win to 6/4. Expecting three sets in the match.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
