Alize Cornet v Paula Badosa Head to Head
Their only previous match came on the clay court of the Madrid Open in 2016 with Cornet winning that opening round clash in three sets.

Cornet Scythes Past Lucky Loser
The world number 53 and the winner of six WTA titles in her career, Cornet had little difficulty in getting past Greek lucky loser Valentini Grammatikopoulou. She won 6-2, 6-2 to march into the second round.
The win comes on the back of what was a steady 2020 for Cornet in which she fluctuated between a season high of 51st in the world and a low of 62nd before wrapping it up with a couple of solid performances.
Her best showing for the year came on the hard court surfaces of the US Open where she reached the fourth round, which included a win over former runner-up Madison Keys. It was Cornet career-best performance at Flushing Meadows as well, and the first time she had made it that far in a major since 2017.
Cornet will hope she can top that up with another few good showings on hard court surfaces including this one where she seems to have a relatively draw till at least the last eight stage. For starters, however, can she get past her Spanish opponent ranked 17 places behind her.

Badosa Continues to Make Sevastova Suffer
It’s not been a great time of late for Anastasija Sevastova and the world number 70 Badosa prolonged her misery with a three-set win over her Latvian opponent in their opener.
Badosa, whose previous best ranking is 69th, had a solid grip throughout the match, breaking Sevastova thrice in the first set and two more times in the third to pouch the encounter. In the second set too, Badosa led 3-1, but saw that lead slip away before needing to fight back from being a break down at 4-5, only to lose the set.
The Spaniard did not have the best of seasons on hard court surfaces last year, having won just one main draw match at the highest level. That had come early in the season at the Australian Open but for the rest of the year, the clay-court specialist struggled on the WTA tour and only managed a few decent showings at the ITF level.
A win over Sevastova this year will be a morale-booster and with an opponent not too far away in the rankings next up, she would back herself to take Cornet to the distance.
Cornet v Badosa Prediction and Tip
While Cornet is the favourite on paper, this one might be a toughie to call, with Badosa youth giving her opponent’s experience a good fight. Expect a three-setter here.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 5/4 (bet365)
