Dominic Thiem v Matteo Berrettini Head to Head

It’s 2-2 from four of their battles so far.

The Austrian won the first contest on the clay courts of Roland Garros in 2018, but Berrettini avenged that defeat in the quarterfinals of the Shangahi Masters the following year.

They met two more times in 2019, with Thiem winning the semifinal in Vienna in three and Berretini scoring a straight sets win at the ATP Finals. So on hard courts, the Italian has a 2-1 lead over the Austrian.

Thiem Hoping To Improve ATP Cup Record

2020 U.S. Open champion Dominic Thiem will be looking to pick off from where he left last year as the 27-year-old kicks off his ATP Cup campaign against Italy’s Matteo Berretini.

The Austrian, who lost to Rafael Nadal in straight sets in an exhibition match on Friday, is coming off a decent year where he reached the final of the Australian Open (losing to Novak Djokovic in five); staged a remarkable comeback from two sets down to beat Zverev for his first Grand Slam title in Flushing Meadows; and then defeated both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the season-ending ATP Finals to reach the summit clash for the second straight year, only to finish runner-up to Daniil Medvedev.

A two-time French Open finalist and a winner of 17 ATP titles, Thiem didn’t have a great time at the ATP Cup last time around, losing two three-setters, one against Croatia’s Borna Coric in the first tie and the other against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the last tie. Austria lost both those ties (0-3 against Croatia and 1-2 against Poland).

Thiem’s only win in the tournament came against Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman as the European team beat the South American side 3-0. Schwartzman, however, avenged that defeat at the French Open, beating the Austrian in a sapping five-set quarterfinal.

Berrettini Looking To Get Back His 2019 Touch

Facing Thiem on Day 1 will be the 2019 U.S. Open semifinalist Matteo Berrrettini, who will be making a debut in the tournament after dropping out of last year’s event due to an injury.

The 24-year-old Berrettini had a sensational 2019 when he won two titles, finished runner-up once and made the semifinals on five other occasions, which included a maiden appearance in the last four of a major.

The Italian couldn’t replicate that form in the shortened 2020 season, failing to reach the semifinals in any of the six tournaments he played in, finishing the year with a 9-6 overall record.

The aggressive right-hander is one of the few players to have already featured in an ATP Tour event this year, reaching the quarterfinals of the Antalya Open before losing to Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in straight sets.

Thiem v Berrettini Prediction and Tip

This promises to be a feisty contest between two aggressive players who have shared the spoils in their previous four duels. However, Thiem would be a slight favourite to win this contest as he has shown good form throughout 2020, while his opponent has struggled to recapture the form of 2019.

Tip: Thiem to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
