Ekaterina Alexandrova v Tereza Martincova Head to Head
There have been four matches played between these two players. Two of them came on the WTA circuit while the remaining two were hosted at the ITF level and at both, it’s one win apiece giving them a 2-2 head to head.
They had met at this very tournament in 2019 as well, and Alexandrova had registered a 7-5, 6-2 victory in the process.

Having made a solid start to the season, Alexandrova looks to have lost some of her rhythm and now faces the prospect of a fourth defeat in a row coming into this encounter.
The Russian went down to Ash Barty in the third round of the Australian Open, a result that obviously wasn’t that big of a surprise but following that defeat, she has lost two more. At the WTA Lyon, she was crushed by Danish youngster Clara Tauson in the first round, who later went on to win the title there, and that was followed by a gut-wrenching loss to Cori Gauff in her opener in Dubai.
That defeat came in three sets with Gauff clinching the final set tie-breaker 8-6, making it three losses in three for the Russian.
Now, with a first round bye allowing Alexandrova some extra time to think how she needs to turn things around, it would be interesting to watch this one.

Solid Martincova Inching Towards Top 100
Martincova is 26 years old, and has never seen the inside of the top 100 on the WTA charts. That said, she has shown a steady improvement in her performances and has improved from a season-low of 158th in the pandemic-curtailed 2020 season to her current 107th.
And having registered a first round win here in St. Petersburg, she has already climbed up four places to nudge at the doors of the top 100. The good news for her is she is now up against an opponent she has beaten twice before this and struggling for momentum as well.
On the other hand, Martincova herself has shown the kind of spark that has confidence written all over her.
Since losing in the qualifiers of the Australian Open, Martincova has had a couple of mediocre runs on the ITF circuit but has followed that up a second round appearance at the Lyon Open and a third round in Dubai. Both, as a qualifier.
And here in St. Petersburg, she overcame Stefanie Voegele in three sets to seal her place in the second round.
Can this confidence trump the out of form but otherwise solid Alexandrova?
