Petra Kvitová v Alize Cornet Head to Head

Both of their previous two meetings have come in second rounds of the US Open with Kvitova not dropping a set in getting past Cornet. The first came in 2012 and that was followed by a second five years later.

In between that there was a meeting at the 2014 Hopman Cup as well where Kvitova won in three sets.

Kvitová Coming off an Injury

Things looked to be going well for Kvitova in Doha where she defeated four, really tough opponents in their own right to win the title.

Successive victories over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Anett Kontaveit, Jessica Pegula and Garbine Muguruza can never be overstated in a ride to a victory which meant the world number 10 had a plethora of confidence coming into her opening round match in Dubai the following week.

Unfortunately for Kvitova, her thigh gave way and she had to retire from her second round match – after an opening bye – against Jil Teichmann in the second set. She was down a set and leading 4-3 in the second when she decided not to continue, admitting that her issues had stemmed from the time she had reached the semifinal in Doha.

Kvitova, who had earlier won and lost two matches in Australia this season, including a second round exit at the Australian Open, will hope her adductor feels a lot better coming into this first match since that Teichmann retirement.

She does have an opponent who has rarely tested her before this.

Cornet Shocks Kuznetsova

For a player who has been struggling to get going all season, Cornet’s win over Svetlana Kuznetsova after being a set down has been one of the upsets of the tournament. Kuznetsova had gone into the encounter at 4/6 to win the match and when she broke the Frenchwoman in the third and the seventh game of the set, it looked like things were going to script.

Except that Cornet was writing her own story on the side.

In the second set, Cornet turned things around with her own solid serving and raced off to a 5-0 lead with two breaks of serve. While she dropped her serve once while going for the set, the world number 61 broke back in the eighth game to level the match.

And then in the final set, Cornet she repeated something similar with two more breaks of serve to go 5-0 up yet again. This time around there was no respite for the Russian who managed to hold on to her serve once but was blasted off the court with an easy hold for Cornet who marched into the second round in two hours and 11 minutes.

Can she now emulate her performance from 2019 where Cornet had made round three?

Kvitová v Cornet Prediction and Tip

While Kvitova is 1/4 to win this, there would always be that question-mark over her fitness concerns. Add that to the manner in which Cornet won her opener and we could be looking at a tight match which goes into a third set.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
