Keys Hasn’t Quite Gotten Going

It hasn’t been the kind of beginning to the season that Keys would have liked. She has participated in two tournaments before this one in Miami and lost in the second round at both of them.

Having missed the Australian leg of the WTA tour, Keys kick-started her season with an appearance at the WTA Doha, where she started off with a convincing victory over Belinda Bencic in her opener. But just when one thought that win should have given her a lot of confidence, Keys fell 6-2, 6-2 to Maria Sakkari in the second round.

Another opening victory followed in Dubai against the 223rd-ranked En Shuo Liang which was very much on expected lines but a loss immediately after that to Anastasia Potapova wouldn’t have filled Keys with a lot of confidence.

Keys, whose last WTA titles have all come in tournaments played in the USA, doesn’t have the best record at the Miami Open. Over the last three seasons when it was held, Keys has made it as far as the third round only once, while losing in the second round the last two times.

To add to that, over the nine seasons Keys has played in Miami, she has gotten as far as the quarterfinals only once – in 2016. Can she start things off here with a convincing win and aim to emulate her best performance in the last four seasons?

Konjuh Easing Back on to the Tour

A WTA title winner at a young age of 17, Konjuh reached a world ranking of 20th very soon after that. That, however, was the good side of her tennis story with the not so good following soon after as she suffered multiple injury-related issues including a right elbow problem that kept her away for a while from tennis.

After barely playing a handful of matches over the 2018-19 seasons, she returned in 2020 to participate on the ITF circuit to try and regain ranking points. A title win on clay, and a couple of other semifinals on indoor hard-courts helped her jump from 1282nd at that stage to a year-ending ranking of 476th in the world.

This year, the Croat has done enough to make further improvements by qualifying for the WTA Dubai and reaching 338th in the world before the start of this tournament.

And a first round win over the 4/6 favourite Katerina Siniakova in the first round here would have helped regain some more confidence.

The question now is if she can go the distance against a top-20 player.

Keys v Konjuh Prediction and Tip

Keys is 2/5 to win this while Konjuh is understandably a second-favourite here by some distance, starting out at 2/1 but we think this could be a closer than expected contest. For one, Keys is still finding her feet on the tour this season and secondly, Konjuh has shown what she is capable of on her return too.

Tip: Konjuh to win a set – Yes: 8/11 (bet365)
