Kwon Looking For First Win on Clay
Not an accomplished clay court player, South Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo comes to Andalucia Open with a 3-5 record this season.
Having begun the season with a first round defeat to Sebastian Korda at Delray Beach, Kwon registered his first win of the year at Melbourne-1, beating Slovakia’s Andrej Martin in three. He was knocked out in the second round, though, by Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic.
The defeat was followed by a third first-round exit from the Australian Open in as many main draw appearances, as Kwon went down easily to Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis in the Round of 128.
The 23-year-old South Korean struck form immediately after his exit from Melbourne, winning the Biella-2 Challenger event in Italy by beating Lorenzo Musetti in the final and then reaching the quarterfinal of the Singapore Open, by winning his first two rounds before going down fighting to Marin Cilic in three.
Kwon reached another quarterfinal at a Challenger in Nur Sultan and then lost to Belarus’ Ilya Ivashka in the first round of the Miami Open. The match that needed three tie-breaks saw the Belarusian win 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3).
Kwon, who won his only Grand Slam match at the U.S. Open last year, has won eight Challenger and Futures titles from 11 finals. He is 21-22 overall on the tour and 0-1 on clay courts.

Rune Making an Impression at 17
On Monday, Kwon will face junior World No. 1 Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune of Denmark, who made heads turn at the Chile Open last month with his sensational run to the quarterfinals in what was only his second Tour-level tournament.
Having begun the season with three finals from three ITF events, Rune went on to capture his fourth ITF title in Bressuire, France.
He made his ATP main draw debut at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires, a week before the start of the Chile Open, and immediately made an impact, winning the first set against fifth seed Albert Ramos Vinolas.
But the Spaniard came back in the contest and handed the Dane a defeat on debut. However, the 17-year-old didn’t have to wait long for his first win as he reached the main draw in Chile by winning three tough three-setters against Portugal’s Goncalo Oliveira, Ecuador’s Emilio Gomez and Argentina’s Renzo Olivo in the three qualifying rounds.
Rune recorded his maiden ATP main draw win against Argentina’s Sebastian Baez, winning the first round contest 6-3, 6-2. In the Round of 16, he scored the biggest win of his career, defeating the second seed and World No. 29 Benoit Paire 6-2, 6-3 in just 62 minutes. His run eventually ended with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat to Argentina’s Federico Delbonis.
Following his exploits at the Chile Open, the 2019 French Open boy’s champion lost to Baez in the first round of Santiago Challenger and failed to qualify for the Marbella Challenger last week.
Kwon Soon-woo v Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune Prediction and Tip
Kwon is the experienced player, but has barely played on clay at this level. Rune is on his preferred surface and has already made an impact in the South American clay season last month. Can Rune pull off another upset against a top-100 player? Can’t rule out the possibility.
Tip: Rune to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
