Ash Barty v Misaki Doi Head to Head

This will be the first match between the world number one Barty and the 77th-ranked Doi.

Barty’s First Clay Match Since 2019

World number one Barty’s only Grand Slam title came at the 2019 French Open, which rather interestingly was also the last time she stepped out to play a competitive match on clay.

She missed the whole of the post-pandemic-break portion of the previous season, opting not to defend her French Open title which means when she takes to court at Charleston, Barty would not just be playing her first match on this surface in nearly two years, she would also be on a seven-match winning streak on clay.

And as far as form goes, Barty has already won two WTA titles this season.

The first came at the Yarra Valley Classic in the lead-up to the Australian Open, where she defeated Garbine Muguruza in the final. One of the pre-tournament favourites, Barty was then ousted in the quarterfinals of the season’s first Grand Slam only to bounce back and defend her Miami Open title.

That victory in Miami would give Barty a lot more confidence too given the players she had to get past to win the tournament. It started with a near-upset at the hands of Kristina Kucova but the Aussie came back to defeat Jelena Ostapenko, Victoria Azarenka, Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina before she led Bianca Andreescu 6-3, 4-0 when the latter retired from the encounter.

Doi Gets Past Shvedova

In an encounter lasting an hour and 25 minutes, Doi came through her first round match against Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 6-3 to set up this meeting against the top seed. Doi broke her opponent five times in the entire match and while she faced two break-points and was broken both times as well, the Japanese player never looked really unsettled.

It was Shvedova who drew first blood with a break of serve in the very first game, but Doi retaliated with back to back breaks to race to a 4-1 lead. She closed the set out soon after that.

Doi began the second set with a break of serve before Shvedova broke back to level things out. The Japanese player then went 3-1 up with a second break, and then converted the second match-point she got as her opponent served to stay in the encounter.

The world number 77 came into this tournament with back to back defeats and hasn’t won two matches in the same tournament since the WTA Japan Open in 2019 where she had stunned Kristina Mladenovic and Donna Vekic in back to back matches.

It looks very much doubtful she would be doing that here either.

Barty v Doi Prediction and Tip

Barty is a whopping 1/12 to win this but the more interesting market is the games handicap. Can we look at Barty at -6.5 on that?

Tip: Games Handicap Barty -6.5: 5/6 (bet365)
