Marketa Vondrousova v Kurumi Nara Head to Head

World No. 20 Vondrousova defeated Nara in their only previous meeting at the Australian Open in 2018. The Czech won the first round contest 7-5, 6-4.

Vondrousova Looking to Build on Decent First Quarter

2019 French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova will begin her Charleston Open challenge in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, after the ninth seed was handed a first-round bye.

The 21-year-old, who reached the semifinals of the Yarra Valley Classic earlier this year, comes into the tournament with a decent 9-5 record in 2021.

Vondrousova, who lost her season opener in Abu Dhabi to Hsieh Su-wei, defeated Russia’s Varvara Gracheva and Vera Zvonareva and Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska en route to the final four at the Yarra Valley Classic. However she was blown away in the semifinals by Spain’s Garbine Mugutruza, who reached the final with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

At the Australian Open, Vondrousova, who had never gone past the second round, won three matches in a row to reach the Round of 16. The skilful lefty defeated Rebecca Peterson, Rebecca Marino and Sorana Cirstea before falling to Taipei’s Hsieh Su-wei for the second time in the year.

In Dubai, she got through the opening round by knocking out Ana Bogdan but fell to Cori Gauff despite taking a one-set lead.

Vondrousova looked in decent touch in Miami as well, reaching the Round of 16 with wins over China’s Wang Qiang and Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, but was outplayed by Aryna Sabalenka in a one-sided fourth round contest.

The Czech, who won her only WTA title as a 17-year-old in Biel, had three runner-up finishes in 2019, in Budapest, Istanbul and Roland Garros.

Nara Too Strong for Di Lorenzo

Facing Vondrousova in the second round will be Japan’s Kurumi Nara, who knocked out America’s Francesca Di Lorenzo in the first round.

The 29-year-old Japanese, ranked 162nd in the world, needed just and hour and 23 minutes to beat the 23-year-old American 6-2, 6-2 for her first main draw win of the year.

Nara, who reached a career-high ranking of 32 following her title success in Rio and runner-up finish at the Citi Open in 2014, qualified for the main draw in Charleston after demolishing  Americans Whitley Pate and Allie Kiick in straight sets in the qualifiers.

This year, the Japanese had lost in the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open, and the events in Guadalajara and Monterrey. Her only other appearance was at an ITF event in the UAE, where she reached the semifinals before retiring midway in the first set against Clara Tauson.

Nara has had six titles from 12 finals at the ITF level.

Vondrousova v Nara Prediction and Tip

Vondrousova will be a heavy favourite to win this contest. Expect the Czech to knock out the Japanese qualifier to reach the Round of 16.

Tip: Vondrousova to win in straight sets: 1/2 (bet365)
