Saisai Zheng v Stefanie Voegele Head to Head
On the WTA tour, they have both won one match apiece with Zheng having taken the lead at the US Open in 2014 and Voegele having levelled it in Kaohsiung in 2016. They faced off for the third time on the ITF tour in 2018 and Voegele won that encounter on clay in three sets.

Things hadn’t looked too good for Zheng since her return to tennis from the pandemic break, as she first opted not to play a single match last season even after tennis resumed and struggled to get going this year.
The Chinese player lost six matches in a row to kick-start the 2021 season, crashing out in the first round of every tournament she had played till then.
It was at the Monterrey Open that Zheng finally won a match – two in a row in fact – to enter the quarterfinals, and then upset Fiona Ferro at the Miami Open to move to the second round.
Now, playing in her first match on clay since 2019, Zheng gave a taste of how she could go with a punishing opening round performance here. She crushed American Usue Maitane Arconada in the first round, winning 6-3, 6-1, to set herself up for this second round match against a player struggling for her own form.

Voegele Finally Wins One on Clay
Once ranked 42nd in the world, Voegele’s recent struggles have resulted in the Swiss player falling down the ranks and she is currently a 127th-ranked player. And that was reflected on her performance on clay as well, with her opening round win here being her first main draw win on this surface in nearly two years.
Voegele needed nearly two and a half hours to get past Chloe Pacquet in the first round, clinching it 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to move into round two.
She faced eight break-points in the match, and was broken twice while herself breaking her opponent four times, after having gotten 14 opportunities to do so.
The world number 127 will need to do a lot better on both, her serve and at crucial moments like while getting break-points as she goes along in this tournament; not too many top players would offer those many chances anyway.
Zheng v Voegele Prediction and Tip
Zheng was in a lot of strife not so long ago but now starts off a heavy favourite to win this one at 2/5. We would still be wary of this, and think that Voegele might use her experience to eke out a set.
