Struff Takes the Long Route
Not too many expected Joao Sousa to take the fight to Struff but that’s exactly what happened when the 107th-ranked player broke the German twice in the first set to ease through it.
Struff did come back well to clinch the second and level the proceedings but when Sousa first broke to go 2-0 up and then broke yet again to take a 5-2 lead, the writing seemed to be on the wall for his German opponent.
It was Struff’s tenacity that saw him overcome three match-points on his own serve at 2-5 and then two more at 4-5 before turning things around and winning the match off his own fifth match-point.
This win comes on the back a very ordinary showing from Struff last season on clay where he lost in the first rounds at both, the Italian Masters and Hamburg Open and then made it only as far as the second round at the French Open.
Can he now gallop into the quarterfinal, making it back to back wins on clay for the first time since his French Open campaign of 2019.

Broady Hussles Past Huesler
We had predicted Marc-Andrea Huesler to edge past Broady but the 152nd-ranked Brit proved to be too strong for his opponent, coming through in straight sets to enter the second round.
Broady, who had earlier needed a couple of qualifying round wins to make it to the main draw, clinched his second round place with a 6-1, 6-3 victory in a mere hour and 19 minutes.
The Brit broke his opponent five times in the match, while losing his own serve only once – it came in the fourth game when Huesler showed signs of a fight to level the proceedings at 2-2. Another break of serve in a longish seventh game followed suit to give Broady the advantage and just as Huesler served to stay in the match, he was broken again to finish off the match.
With this win, Broady can now be expected to break into the top 150 for the first time in his career but the bigger question is if this is the best that he has played in a long time and whether that can translate into something bigger and better.
Struff v Broady Prediction and Tip
Broady might be 7/4 to win this encounter but if he can continue in the same vein as was on display last round, he should have a good chance. Expect him to win a set at least.
