McNally Advantages from Rybakina Injury

McNally registered the best win of her career when she defeated Elena Rybakina in a match shortened because of the latter’s illness. Rybakina retired from the encounter after losing the first set 4-6, with the set itself lasting 55 minutes.

There were a lot of five breaks in that sole set in the encounter, with McNally getting herself a whopping 14 break-points as her opponent struggled badly with her serve. In the end, McNally broke Rybakina three times to scrape through to the win.

With this victory, the 19-year-old also carved out her first ever clay court win in the main draw of a WTA event, having won a qualifier at the French Open last season. Earlier this year, the American player had helped herself to a quarterfinal at the Guadalajara Open before she went down to Eugenie Bouchard in that round.

She now takes on a former world number 11 for a place in the third round.

Sevastova Wastes No Time on Potapova

While McNally needed 55 minutes for the one set she won to advance to the second round of her match, Sevastova came through 6-3, 6-3 against Anatasia Potapova in her opening round in a mere hour and 12 minutes.

The Latvian world number 47 was off to a solid start as she helped herself to three break-points and broke her opponent twice. Up 4-1, the pair then exchanged four breaks of serves that took Sevastova to winning the opening set.

The second set saw a cagier affair as both players refused to give their opponent an inch, and the only break-point that came in the first seven games was saved easily. It was in the eighth game of the set that Potapova lost focus, and afforded Sevastova three break-points, of which she needed just one before serving out the match.

Sevastova had come into this match on the back of having lost both her previous two clay court matches – in 2020 – but with a title win in Jurmala before that in 2019.

McNally v Sevastova Prediction and Tip

Sevastova starts off at 3/10 to win but there’s always a question-mark on her consistency, as can be seen from the fact this season she had won and lost seven matches before this one. We expect this to be a lot closer than what those odds suggest.

Tip: Games Handicap McNally +4.5: 5/6 (bet365)
