Cori Gauff v Liudmila Samsonova Head to Head

They have met just once before, in the first qualifying round of the Linz Open in 2019, and Gauff won that match 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Gauff Hussles Past Pironkova

Cori Gauff needed just 72 minutes to dispatch Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova in the first round on Tuesday.

Broken just once in the first set, the 17-year-old converted six of 13 break point chances to advance into the next round with a 6-3, 6-0 victory.

The win improved Gauff to 10-6 this year, and if you include the two qualifying rounds in Adelaide, she is 12-6 in 2021. She had come into the tournament with a two match losing streak, having lost the quarterfinal in Dubai to Jil Teichmann and her second round match at the Miami Open to Anastasija Sevastova.

She will be delighted to have snapped that streak quickly and also happy to have won the contest in straight sets. Ten of her 18 matches this year have been three-set affairs and the American is 7-3 in them.

One stat from Tuesday that Gauff wouldn’t be happy about is the first serve percentage. Gauff got just 47.9% first serves right, however, she won 78% of those points and 48% second serve points.

The World No. 36, who won the title in Linz in 2019 after making the main draw as a lucky loser, has been in good rhythm this year, reaching the semifinal in Adelaide as a qualifier and the quarterfinal in Dubai. She will be aiming for another deep run in Charleston but faces a very tricky second-round contest against an opponent who had given her a tough fight in their previous meeting.

Samsonova Too Strong for Hibino

Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova needed just an hour and eight minutes to send Japan’s Nao Hibino packing in the first round in Charleston on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old saved all three of the break points she faced, and broke her opponent’s serve on four occasions to clinch the contest 6-2, 6-1.

A winner of four ITF titles, the Russian came to Charleston on the back of her best-ever showing at the top level, having reached the third round of the Miami Open.

After qualifying for the main draw in Miami, Samsonova defeated Italy’s Camila Giorgi for her first WTA 1000 win and then stunned World No. 11 Kiki Bertens to book a place in the Round of 32, where she faced a straight sets demolition at the hands of Greece’s Maria Sakkari.

Earlier this season, the World No. 110 had also won her first round match at the Australian Open to reach the Round of 64 of a major for the first time in her career. Playing as a qualifier, she had defeated Spain’s Paula Badosa 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 in the Round of 128 in Melbourne but was outplayed by Garbine Muguruza in the next round.

Samsonova, who improved to 11-5 overall after Tuesday’s win, has been involved in five three-setters this year, winning three of them.

Gauff v Samsonova Prediction and Tip

With Samsonova slowly making a mark at the top level, Gauff won’t be taking her opponent lightly, despite the gap in their rankings. Expect this to be a very close contest with Gauff edging past the Russian.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
