Kudermetova leads 1-0, having won their only previous matchup in Shenzhen 2019 in straight sets.

Kudermetova In Her Second Final of the Year

Fifteenth seed Veronika Kudermetova of Russia reached her second WTA 500 final this year after she defeated Spain’s Paula Badosa in the semifinal of the Charleston Open on Saturday.

The World no. 38 needed just an hour and 30 minutes to dispatch the Spaniard 6-3, 6-3.

The win improved Kudermetova to 16-8 this year.

The 23-year-old Russian had reached her maiden WTA final in Abu Dhabi at the start of 2021 but failed to win her first title falling to Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

In Charleston, Kudermetova started off brightly with a 6-1, 6-2 opening round win over America’s Desirae Krawczyk, before beating another American Emma Navarro 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.

She was equally ruthless in the Round of 16, knocking out Japan’s Kurumi Nara 6-0, 6-3 and carried the momentum to the last eight, as she stormed past Sloane Stephens with a 6-3, 6-4 win.

On Saturday, the Russian was broken just once in the match while she broke her opponent’s serve four times.

The Russian, who won a WTA 125K Series title in Guadalajara in 2019, also reached the third round of the Australian Open for the first time this year, but a maiden fourth round at a Grand Slam remained elusive after she was defeated by Simona Halep. Kudermetova had also reached the third round of the French Open in 2019.

In Abu Dhabi, Kudermetova also clinched her fifth top 10 win, defeating Elina Svitolina for the second time in her career. Among her other top 10 wins, she has beaten Karolina Pliskova twice and Belinda Bencic once.

Kovinic Hustles Past Jabeur

Facing Kudermetova in the final will be Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic, who needed just 78 minutes to oust 12th seed Ons Jabeur 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinal on Saturday to reach her first WTA 500 final.

Kovinic, who had earlier reached two WTA 250 finals in Tianjin in 2015 and Istanbul in 2016, is yet to win a first WTA title.

The 26-year-old had come to Charleston with a 2-5 record in 2021. However, five consecutive wins later, the World No. 91 has improved  to 7-5 this season.

Having begun the tournament with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win against Romania’s Gabriela Talaba, Kovinic knocked out Monterrey champion Leylah Fernandez in a three-set second round contest, before causing a massive upset in the third round, defeating third seed Petra Kvitova 6-4, 6-1.

In the quarterfinal, Kovinic came back from a set down to upset another seed, beating 11th-seed Yulia Putintseva 6-7 (2-7), 7-5, 6-1.

On Saturday, against Jabeur, Kovinic completed a hat-trick of wins against seeded players.

Jabeur, who had six break point opportunities in the match, converted only one of them, while Kovinic broke the Tunisian four times in the contest.

Kudermetova v Kovinic Prediction and Tip

The 15th seed Kudermetova will be wary of Kovinic’s new-found habit of toppling seeds. However, the Russian will still be the favourite to win the final and claim her maiden title.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
