Hubert Hurkacz v Thomas Fabbiano Head to Head

The only previous occasion when Hurkacz and Fabbiano played each other was at the qualifiers of the Montreal Masters of 2017. Fabbiano had won that match in three sets.

Hurkacz at Career-Best after Career-Best

Hurkacz had begun the season with a title at the Delray Beach Open but his form seemed to have fallen away since, with opening round exits at the Australian Open and Montpellier Open and second round losses at the Rotterdam Open and ATP Dubai following that.

Which is why, in five of the six matches that he played at the Miami Masters, Hurkacz went in as the second favourite. And he won them all to lift the Miami Masters title.

These included victories against Denis Shapovalov, Milos Raonic, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev before he toppled Jannik Sinner in the title-decider.

Clay will be a different proposition for a player like Hurkacz who has a poor record on clay. He has never reached the final of any ATP tournaments on clay and his best performance at the French Open has been a second round appearance in 2018.

Even here, in Monte-Carlo, he has never progressed beyond the first round, with his third round appearances at both, Madrid Masters and Italian Open being his best showing on clay.

Can the freshly injected confidence from his performance at the Miami Masters recently bring about a change in fortunes on clay?

Fabbiano Qualifies with Surprise Wins

Ranked 172nd in the world, Fabbiano needed the qualification route to make it to the main draw of the Monte-Carlo Masters and even that came with the need to overcome two difficult opponents.

In both his victories, against Federico Coria and Joao Sousa, Fabbiano was a second favourite to win the match and did that in the end.

Coming up from having not won a main draw match on the ATP circuit since the 2019 US Open, those were big results for Fabbiano on clay, especially for someone who hasn’t done too well on that surface.

And while his opponent in this one is himself not one of the best clay-courters, expecting Fabbiano to go past a player coming into this competition with a Masters title victory under his belt two weeks would be stretching it.

Hurkacz v Fabbiano Prediction and Tip

Hurkacz is a whopping 1/6 to win this match and while we expected him to start off as a heavy favourite there is one factor worth considering – the Pole hasn’t played a single match on clay this season while Fabbiano has had a few bites at the cherry. Could that be a factor in making this more of a balanced encounter than those odds suggest?

Tip: Hurkacz to win AND Over 19.5 games in the match: 13/10 (bet365)
