In one of the most one-sided matches of the tournament, Rogers spent barely an hour in getting past Caty McNally in her first round win. She won 6-0, 6-1, breaking her opponent five times and saving all the four break-points she herself faced in the encounter.
That win came on the back of a solid Charleston Open campaign last week as well, where Rogers had made it to third round where she was edged out by Ash Barty. And even in that defeat at the hands of the world number one, Rogers gave a glimpse of why she is one of the more dangerous floaters in most tennis draws at the moment, falling to a hard-fought loss – 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-4.
What’s also impressive to note is Rogers’ change in fortunes haven’t been restricted to clay or this season alone.
Last year, Rogers had started off at a season-low of 174th in the world but over the 15 months or so – minus the five months of no tennis due to the pandemic break – she has risen to her career-best ranking of 46th.
And while clay isn’t her most favourite surface, Rogers can be expected to make a fist of another tournament this season irrespective of the surface.

Liu Weathers Sanders Storm
A qualifier and having never been ranked better than 137th in the world, Liu came into this tournament with a solid record on the ITF circuit but without a main draw win since the 2018 US Open.
That has turned around in this tournament as she makes it to the second round following a three-set win over Australian Storm Sanders.
After an evenly-fought first two sets in her opening round match against Sanders, Liu demolished her opponent in an anti-climatic third set to win 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 and claim a second round place. The match lasted two hours and 18 minutes, following on from her qualifying wins over Ellen Perez and Hailey Baptiste.
Earlier this year, Liu had played all her matches on hard court surface and made it as far as two title-deciding rounds on the ITF circuit.
A change in surface hasn’t changed her form at all and while Liu now faces a player who is at the top of her game, she would go into the encounter feeling good about her own tennis.
Rogers v Liu Prediction and Tip
Rogers is an overwhelming favourite here at 1/5 but it might not be as one-sided a victory as that for her as Liu’s form seems to suggest.
